Fatigue and the mind-body relation: A Lacanian exploration, Diserholt, 2020 (PhD thesis)

Yes, and of course it's mainly the therapist who is insulated from harsh reality, with every naturally occurring recovery bolstering their sense of having the solution. No science required. The client might get some temporary reassurance that they are facing a problem that can be overcome by...

Fatigue and the mind-body relation: A Lacanian exploration, Diserholt, 2020 (PhD thesis)

She seems like a nice well-meaning young woman. I know we are really careful when using the word 'cult' on this forum, but that was what came to mind as I listened to her - a capturing of the mind with the seductiveness of being part of a group with 'special knowledge' that others do not have...

Fatigue and the mind-body relation: A Lacanian exploration, Diserholt, 2020 (PhD thesis)

I can't imagine many of you made it through to the 40 minute mark, but I was pitting cherries and so time passed. There were a couple of passages just after 40 minutes that I thought were worth recording here: Diserholt: a very complex area, where fatigue is both this sort of trying to use...

Safety and efficacy of amantadine, modafinil, and methylphenidate for fatigue in multiple sclerosis..., 2020, Nourbakhsh et al

I agree that it was unlikely to find a positive result @rvallee, but sometimes research has to be done to disprove something. At least it looks to have been done well enough to find that these drugs weren't helpful. I think this finding, especially the finding of more harm, is useful for us...

Use of sildenafil (viagra) to alter fatigue, functional status and impaired cerebral blood flow in ... CFS, 2020, Friedman (Pfizer)

I emailed Professor Friedman, asking about the trial, including whether the blinding might not have worked, and he very kindly replied: Which is a shame.

Use of sildenafil (viagra) to alter fatigue, functional status and impaired cerebral blood flow in ... CFS, 2020, Friedman (Pfizer)

This study was double-blinded. It's a bit odd that the study was finished in 2010, but not written up until 2017. The reduction in fatigue could be significant e.g. an average reduction of 32 could mean that someone scoring most of the 42 questions as most severe (5 out of 5) at baseline...

Exercise Intolerance in Cystic Fibrosis Importance of Skeletal Muscle, 2020, Harris et al

Posts about a study on use of sildenafil in chronic fatigue syndrome have been moved to a new thread here: Use of sildenafil (viagra) to alter fatigue, functional status and impaired cerebral blood flow in ... CFS, 2020, Pfizer

BPS attempts at psychologizing Long Covid

From the above article: I think his twitter name 'mellojonny' is aspirational rather than rooted in fact. Perhaps he should see someone about those feelings. Perhaps he'd be better suited to another profession, something that didn't require him to interact with people.

    NICE ME/CFS guideline - draft published for consultation - 10th November 2020

Possibly people felt that the recommendations would not be particularly influential given that the Priority Setting Partnership process (for identifying priority research) is underway?

    Augmentin side effects

I and my children have used augmentin quite a few times over the years, mainly for ear infections, although just in tablet form. I've never noticed any significant side effects, including since developing ME/CFS. I hope you can get on top of your infection soon.

Possible involvement of the autonomic nervous system in cervical muscles of patients with ME/CFS, Matsui et al, 2020/1

Or staying in hospital required a lot less effort than their normal life did, so some of the people felt quite a lot better at the end of the hospital stay?

BPS attempts at psychologizing Long Covid

A bit off-topic, but too pleasing to resist: In that article about the paper on mental illness after Covid, Coyne mentions the campaign against people with ME/CFS by the SMC as an example of how that lobby group contributes to the media getting things wrong It goes on to mention the draft NICE...

Suggestibility in functional neurological disorder: a meta-analysis, 2020, Wieder et al

Assuming the scales etc really measured suggestibility (which is a big assumption), I think this might say more about the nature of people willing to participate in these studies and be labeled as having 'previously referred to as hysteria, and also known as conversion disorder, functional...

    NICE ME/CFS guideline - draft published for consultation - 10th November 2020

I've mentioned elsewhere the example in my city (outside the UK) of a service hub in a nice accessible building for people with neurological conditions. So that includes people with Parkinsons, MS, autism, dementia, traumatic brain injury... The plan is that patient support charities share...

Evidence of Structural Protein Damage and Membrane Lipid Remodeling in Red Blood Cells from COVID-19 Patients, 2020, Thomas et al

The article is readable and interesting. It's not exactly clear that the researcher mentioned in the article has yet recovered, although he is attributing his ongoing effects first to damage to his red blood cells (which should be corrected when there are new red blood cells) and now...

Evidence of Structural Protein Damage and Membrane Lipid Remodeling in Red Blood Cells from COVID-19 Patients, 2020, Thomas et al

This is the red blood cell paper referred to in the article: Evidence of Structural Protein Damage and Membrane Lipid Remodeling in Red Blood Cells from COVID-19 Patients https://pubs.acs.org/doi/10.1021/acs.jproteome.0c00606 Abstract The SARS-CoV-2 beta coronavirus is the etiological...

A hierarchical logistic regression predicting rapid respiratory rates from post-exertional malaise. Jason et al. 2020

I haven't read the study yet, but assuming the finding is correct, there's faster breathing in PEM Factors that affect breathing rate: age, gender, size and weight, exercise, anxiety, pain, the effect of some medicines, smoking habits and excitement level, infections, sepsis The pain of PEM...
