Successful Psychological Strategies of Experienced Chronic Fatigue Patients: A Qualitative Study, 2021, Hall et al

While pottering in my (partially) raised garden, it occurred to me that part of the problem with this paper is the assumption that it is the doctor's role to provide life advice (and discourage a patient's quest for medical answers for their condition). Doctors often come from a very defined...

Successful Psychological Strategies of Experienced Chronic Fatigue Patients: A Qualitative Study, 2021, Hall et al

Yes, don't refer your patient to other clinicians, instead help them cultivate quiet acceptance. Because you are actually doing your patient a favour, saving them the effort of recounting their story. Look, this study, while not revelatory, is not terrible. It's true that there are ways to...

Prevalence of Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS) in Korea and Japan: A Meta-Analysis, 2021, Lim and Son A review of epidemiology in Korea, and Japan. Issues with diagnostic criteria, but interesting to see gender ratios that are less skewed towards female than has often been found elsewhere.

Diffusion tensor imaging reveals neuronal microstructural changes in Myalgic Encephalomyelitis/Chronic Fatigue Syndrome., 2021, Thapaliya et al

It looks like, as for other brain imaging, this is a technology where there is a lot of scope for bias. Twenty-five pitfalls in the analysis of diffusion MRI data Unfortunately, the pitfall article is paywalled, but it looks interesting Knowing that, it made me want to check out the authors...

Diffusion tensor imaging reveals neuronal microstructural changes in Myalgic Encephalomyelitis/Chronic Fatigue Syndrome., 2021, Thapaliya et al

DTI seems to be a type of MRI that quantifies the diffusion of water molecules in the brain. An introduction to diffusion tensor image analysis

Hypothalamic-Pituitary autoimmunity and related impairment of hormone secretions in chronic fatigue syndrome, 2021, De Bellis, Montoya et al

I agree this is worth looking at more. Jonathan has mentioned a potential problem we have seen quite often - where a difference between those with severe ME/CFS and healthy controls turns out to almost certainly be a result of very low levels of activity. There's lots of interesting...

    News from Germany

I agree @Peter Trewhitt, and thanks @MSEsperanza . For example, I knew that the GET and CBT studies had been rated a low or very low quality by NICE, but I was not aware of the preponderance of the 'very low' rating: Lots of useful material for advocacy there.

Altered central and peripheral hemodynamics during rhythmic handgrip exercise in young adults with SARS-CoV-2, 2021, Stute et al

It's sounding like the artery is doing what it should, dilating to allow more blood through in response to exercise. In the post-Covid cohort, heart rate increased, so the heart was trying to pump the blood though. The authors seem to think there is a blockage down stream - so the capillaries...

Thanks Michelle, I didn't realise that - I just copied what a source - a source I can't recall - said. I noted the number of messages before and after an approximately 24 hour period. For what it is worth, and all you keen observers of science will know that a single observation is not worth a...

The mapping of cortical activation by near-infrared spectroscopy might be a biomarker related to the severity of [FM] symptoms, 2021, Donadel et al

The study is to measure blood flow to various parts of the brain while sequentially reclining, reclining with right hand in warm water, reclining, reclining with right hand in very cold water, reclining. (sorry, added that a bit later) 22 women in the fibromyalgia group and 19 in the control...

The mapping of cortical activation by near-infrared spectroscopy might be a biomarker related to the severity of [FM] symptoms, 2021, Donadel et al

Hmm, they've definitely drunk the Kool-aid. 'Chronic primary pain condition', 'significant emotional distress', 'depressive symptoms', 'prototypical condition of central sensitivity syndrome', 'persistent state of high reactivity that amplifies nociceptive stimuli', 'psychological distress' -...

Independent advisory group for the full update of the Cochrane review on exercise therapy and ME/CFS (2020), led by Hilda Bastian

The only consolation in this latest politically motivated recruitment decision is that it is unlikely that the IAG as a whole will have much impact on the outcome. As ridiculous as this diversity side show is, it probably doesn't matter very much. My feeling is that whatever the outcome was...

UK Action for ME petition: 'Equity for ME' asking UK governments for equity of recognition and research funding with long Covid. closes 26th Nov 2021

I'm wondering if the petition is somehow related to AfME's likely foray into ME/CFS clinic operation? Perhaps collecting names and contact information of people who might be interested in their service and/or improving the operating environment for a series of ME/CFS clinics?

Independent advisory group for the full update of the Cochrane review on exercise therapy and ME/CFS (2020), led by Hilda Bastian

I'm not sure that it is much more ridiculous than deciding that 'recovery from ME/CFS' is an appropriate qualification for assessing the scientific quality of the evidence for GET. The cast of diversity seems to grow ever larger in this public relations exercise. Why shouldn't Lightning...

I was curious though to see how many posts the forum has and how many Phoenix Rising has. We have 351,000. PR has 1,283,000. I think Science for ME is doing ok, given Phoenix Rising was created in 2003, and Science for ME was created in 2017 - and given that many of the members here...
