Question: Coronavirus & home sewn masks?

Yes I’m good now - I think, it’s when you laugh just that bit TOO enthusiastically, that you realise you are using the laughter as a release. :P I’m back to my usual trundling along mode again. Xx Also YES! Eye-protection is a biggie, and definitely next. Masks and wrap-around sunnies are...

Oh @Roy S - You HAVE made me smile this morning!! Actually, I’m still giggling as I write this. It’s been a tough few days for me (various reasons) so I really needed that smile today. Thank you. Xx

Question: Coronavirus & home sewn masks?

Article that seems relevant here. @Adrian linked it in another thread. Thanks. It pretty much says yes cloth masks can help even if they aren’t perfect.

Question: Coronavirus & home sewn masks?

@NelliePledge There are others many times more productive than me. For example, my husband’s work colleague and his wife have now made and distributed 100s of masks in Northern Ireland. He cuts the pieces and she sews. There are Facebook groups dedicated to pooling resources and supplying...

Question: Coronavirus & home sewn masks?

55 of my original mask design now dispatched - some to doctors & nurses, others to careworkers. All felt they wanted something/anything!! One working on front line said she wanted mask to protect OTHERS as she went shopping, in case she would spread the virus! Thinking Of switching to this...

Question: Coronavirus & home sewn masks?

I’ve found a group locally that are sewing scrubs. Apparently these are in very short supply. So I am planning to switch from masks to scrubs once the current batch of masks is done. I have ordered up some appropriate fabric for scrubs. And yes... all fabric is prewashed on a hot wash. Both...

Coronavirus - worldwide spread and control

This is a video on Facebook (so apologies to those not on there). I LOVE the first bit, but am not convinced by his thought that fist bumps should replace hand shakes:

Coronavirus - worldwide spread and control

I think I read that there can be an incubation time of up to 17 days. So really one week of isolation would mean nothing if he had already been infected.

Coronavirus - worldwide spread and control

I maybe should have preceded my comments with “all other factors being equal”. However I get your point. If a young person’s immune system can better contain the virus, then they may indeed spread fewer viral particles, than an older individual who’s immune system allows the virus to get out...

Coronavirus - worldwide spread and control

I imagine that kissing an COVID infected friend the sofa all evening, would transfer a higher initial viral load to an uninfected person, than might be received if you were unlucky enough to pick up the virus walking past the same infected person outside. So getting “infected” might not mean...

Question: Coronavirus & home sewn masks?

@mango Glad you find this helpful. I haven’t been using elastic. Either tape or ribbon seems fine.

Question: Coronavirus & home sewn masks?

Two problems with that: 1) The vacuum filter would be difficult to breathe through, so instead air would be pushed out, or sucked in, round the sides of the mask, meaning the air wouldn’t go through any filter not even cloth. 2) These masks are washable. Once used they should be taken off into a...

Question: Coronavirus & home sewn masks?

Agree @JemPD - only change I have now made is to add a little green garden wire to the nose area of my masks. I’ve curled the ends of the wire over with pliers so there are no sharp edges. This gives a better fit round the nose, and the rest is as good as cloth gets. :) Edit: I have...

Question: Coronavirus & home sewn masks?

@cyclamen Interesting they say that kitchen paper can act as a filter inside the mask. The article I linked up thread didn’t test actually kitchen paper, although it tested various other textiles. Linking it again...
