Independent advisory group for the full update of the Cochrane review on exercise therapy and ME/CFS (2020), led by Hilda Bastian

Certainly seems so, in fact we can rely on Paul Garner et al to come out and tell us what idiots we are [including NICE] for thinking it's a bad job---! Conversation recently on BBC Radio Ulster - more than half of the NI Block Grant (£6.5 billion ish of the total £13 billion ish) is spent on...

    Maddox Prize again

Yea just checked Wiki: "In 2012, the John Maddox Prize was awarded to British psychiatrist Simon Wessely and Chinese science writer Shi-min Fang.[2][3] Wessely was recognised for continuing his research on Myalgic Encaphalomyelitis/Chronic Fatigue Syndrome despite criticism from patient groups...

Patient Safety Commissioner proposal - First Do No Harm IMMDSReview, 2020, Cumberlege et al

I did think it had filtered through in Lady Cumberlege's questions to the new health Minister. Yes, developing a relationship with the APPG, and indeed Lady Cumberlege, sounds like a good idea --- would take someone with diplomacy ++++ so I'll leave it to others! @It's M.E. Linda

Independent advisory group for the full update of the Cochrane review on exercise therapy and ME/CFS (2020), led by Hilda Bastian

Repeating myself --- I recall watching a film, with some other folks, about a fictional TV presenter who basically took his guests apart - one of the other folks pointed out that a show like that would only last a few episodes - no one would be willing to be a guest. If you proposed to do a...

    UK NICE 2021 ME/CFS Guideline, published 29th October - post-publication discussion

NICE may well be wondering what they've got into* if Paul Garner is criticising them. *"-----This is a high level agreement [NICE/Cochrane], and NICE is in the process of working with Cochrane in an attempt to align processes and methods in the future, and this will take time."...

Independent advisory group for the full update of the Cochrane review on exercise therapy and ME/CFS (2020), led by Hilda Bastian

what could possibly go wrong? --- thanks for the laugh! Yea they may be randomized and non-randomized studies; however, as I recall @Caroline Struthers pointing out --- many of the Cochrane systematic reviews ignore the quality of the base studies --- unreliable derivates of unreliable studies...

    UK NICE 2021 ME/CFS Guideline, published 29th October - post-publication discussion

I do wonder if something could be learned from full genetic testing and/or the NIH's intensive study of individual patients (which identified some misdiagnosis?). In terms of genetic testing, we do have Chris Ponting's genome (GWAS) study - starting in January I believe.

Independent advisory group for the full update of the Cochrane review on exercise therapy and ME/CFS (2020), led by Hilda Bastian

Thanks @Caroline Struthers i.e. for your assistance and to @Michiel Tack too. Caroline, I imagine NICE's reaction when you ask how they [NICE] are going to align the GRADE rating process with Cochrane so that the situation where Cochrane were unable exert any authority over the Exercise review...

    UK NICE 2021 ME/CFS Guideline, published 29th October - post-publication discussion

Hardly merits comment (as you indicate) but if he was a genuine researcher then he'd be looking to do some sound research e.g. using actimetry to address the flaws identified in the previous studies. Oh but then the actimetry was dropped from PACE ---. Hardly worth responding to this nonsense.

Australia and New Zealand clinics: Specialised Health

Yea, reminds me of the focus some people, I met early on, had re the role of insurance companies in promoting GET/CBT ---- bit of untraceable soft lobbying of the politicians via the old boys/girls network---. Thanks to all who challenged the use of unevidenced treatments in the NICE review (I...

Independent advisory group for the full update of the Cochrane review on exercise therapy and ME/CFS (2020), led by Hilda Bastian

Folks, got this reply from NICE i.e. to my email setting out my concerns re NICEs use of GRADE/Cochrane. I haven't even read it yet @Jonathan Edwards @Caroline Struthers "Dear Francis. Thank you for your follow up email. The Cochrane review Exercise therapy for chronic fatigue...

    Covid-19 vaccines and vaccinations

Sorry hadn't read down to Jonathan's reply - ignore. "Boosters give over 90% protection against symptomatic COVID-19 in adults over 50---"*. So that's why they're running the booster program. However, this is population based i.e. you, as per Jonathan's friends, could be the unlucky (>10% who...

    Symptoms of Covid-19

The other thing, is that double vaccinated people can have very mild symptoms i.e. not a classic full house of symptoms. So this new variant infecting people who have been vaccinated/had a previous infection may be producing much milder symptoms --- just anecdote and speculation.

    News from Germany

This looks very promising. Also, once you have a service like this in one country then it becomes more difficult for other countries to make no/lesser service provision ---- well done to Germany. EDIT- @Jonathan Edwards has highlighted that [EDIT-typos] his way, into making progress in...

A Botanical; Containing Cistanche & Ginkgo Extracts; Improves CFS Symptoms in Adults: A Randomized, Double-Blind, Placebo-Controlled study,2021,Kan

Yea and if you read @Trish posts below, you'll see that it's the usual approach of assessing outcomes based on questionnaires (mind ou some of them are a bit different!). Check out @strategist post here* looks like these folks have managed to provide evidence that homeopathy works and without...

United Kingdom: Kings College London; South London and Maudsley NHS Trust

If we acknowledge that some things don't work, then that creates an opportunity to look elsewhere e.g. the GWAS study you were involved in identifying/promoting. Also, much of the poor quality work can be replicated using objective outcome criteria (actimetry). I know you had some ideas about...

    Covid-19 vaccines and vaccinations

My wife mentioned earlier that there was a significant uptake in first vaccines after the vaccine passport was introduced (Northern Ireland). So maybe the incentive of being able to participate in activities, via a vaccine, works. Medic who lives nearby told me months ago that hospitals are...

    Covid-19 vaccines and vaccinations

Interesting, anyone know the rates of hospitalisations and deaths e.g. at 1 year (we've been vaccinating people for about 1 year - I'm loosing track of time). Our hospitals seem to be swamped, and have been for months, here in Northern Ireland.
