News about Long Covid including its relationship to ME/CFS 2020 to 2021

I think you've hit the nail on the head i.e. "they're simply feeling guilty". I have a feeling ME/CFS may benefit from good quality research into Long covid - OK that's probably wildly optimistic!

    Covid-19 vaccines and vaccinations

@Snow Leopard reply is much better but the short answer to me is no - e.g. they are talking of giving Pfizer/AstraZenica (almost) interchangeably in the UK. Also, my impression is that vaccination may be annual (new variants) so it may be a case of a new vaccine every year.

    Covid-19 vaccines and vaccinations

I live in the UK, and have a vulnerable family member, so yes keen to get them vaccinated (and me too). One of the issues would e.g. be ending up in hospital (for something other than covid) and picking up covid when you're there. OK you can limit your contacts to a greater/lesser extent but...

Preprint: Physical phenotype of blood cells is altered in COVID-19, Kubankova et al, 2021

Thanks for the laugh --- skim reading (not in a patient mood) and the words that leapt out were: "the oils" The words in my head were Long John Silver-esk ---"the oils"

    NICE ME/CFS guideline - draft published for consultation - 10th November 2020

My neighbour is a (agency) casualty doctor and yes they have to maintain their accreditation i.e. via an examination (not to be taken lightly). @Hutan

    NICE ME/CFS guideline - draft published for consultation - 10th November 2020

@lunarainbows probably has the professional background to answer this; I'm don't have a medical background. I assume that if you're in the public sector [National Health Service] then you'd be at risk of being disciplined by your employer and indeed your (medical) professional body - failing to...

The biology of coronavirus COVID-19 - including research and treatments

I was going to write that I can't see what the problem is with this guy's research - presumably that's the point i.e. there isn't a problem with his research. Remember that 5G has been controversial in the UK - for a small number of people it is considered a danger.

    NICE ME/CFS guideline - draft published for consultation - 10th November 2020

I've had the pleasure of visiting the South Island - the big trout beat me though --- maybe I'll get to try again some day!

    NICE ME/CFS guideline - draft published for consultation - 10th November 2020

If I actually wanted to "protect" my Government Minister then I'd highlight that supporting the CBT, GET, positive thinking --- approach poses a risk. Why, because you could end up being labelled the nasty politician/party. Take forcing someone to do GET i.e. under a threat of removing their...

    NICE ME/CFS guideline - draft published for consultation - 10th November 2020

To be honest I was relying on memory, i.e. when I wrote the post you replied to; also, more generally, I don't followed this issue closely. I agree you'd need to monitor each participants "baseline" so that you didn't attribute normal fluctuation to the intervention. Also, you'd need to monitor...

    NICE ME/CFS guideline - draft published for consultation - 10th November 2020

Further thoughts on this. These folks talk about numerous studies all finding an improvement with CBT, GET, positive thinking ---. However, the evaluation of these studies did not rely on objective evaluation criteria (activity monitors --- possibly even mobile phone data to assess mobility...

    NICE ME/CFS guideline - draft published for consultation - 10th November 2020

If I were doing a policy paper on this, one of the areas would be - "Financial" (economic benefit) or some such. So if this worked people who are currently not working (and in receipt of benefits/disability benefit) would be well enough to return to work - savings on social security benefits. So...

Do catatonia and ME/CFS have pathophysiological similarities?

By the way Karl, in correspondence, highlighted that he fully supported the decision to fund GWAS. I won't be able to do it justice but when you don't know the cause of a disease then you can use techniques like GWAS to find clues --- I sort of think of it as scoring everything and then...

Do catatonia and ME/CFS have pathophysiological similarities?

If you Google something like "glutamate MRI + Myalgic" then you'll see a bunch of studies. However, I wonder if they had adequate controls - or even how you would obtain adequate controls --- inactivity ---. Karl's results sound interesting; however, I guess that the Glutamate/Glutamine ratio...

    NICE ME/CFS guideline - draft published for consultation - 10th November 2020

Surely most of this suffers from the criticism re a "biased review" applies to these folks. They are pedalling this crap and they haven't been able to present evidence of objective benefit to patients. If they had taken the bother to contact their fellow Norwegian's Fluge, and Mella, (or simply...

Gut dysbiosis in severe mental illness and chronic fatigue: a novel trans-diagnostic construct? A systematic review and meta-analysis, Safadi, 2021

I've had a very brief look at this: "Zonulin is a tight-junction protein and key regulator of intestinal permeability, with increased circulating levels suggesting a compromised intestinal barrier [6]". OK sounds interesting but I wonder if this suggests you should expand they type of [blood...

Brain glial activation in fibromyalgia – A multi-site positron emission tomography investigation (2018) Albrecht et al.

The other thing as @Jonathan Edwards the (Japenese) study, which found evidence of microglia activation, hasn't been replicated. Also, they used an old (not very specific) binding agent in that study; it was supposed to be replicated with one of the newer (more specific) binding agents but I...

Paul Garner on Long Covid and ME/CFS - BMJ articles and other media.

There are reasons why the patient community should challenge the promotion of psychologic interventions, and graded exercise, which have no evidence base. I work at a junior level in a (non-health) public policy area [UK devolved administration]. You take a junior health policy official being...

Paul Garner on Long Covid and ME/CFS - BMJ articles and other media.

Specualation- I vaguely recall something from a BBC Radio 4 program - possibly "All in the Mind". They featured an academic who possibly had won the lottery; she had listened to/analysed a serious of tapes of people going on a first date (stressful situation) and generated some "rules" which...
