USA: The RECOVER Initiative - Long Covid research

Yep. Harms are reformulated as another diagnosis or reframed as the patient being mentally ill. Voila, my treatment is harmless and has a 100% efficacy rate. Recall how Crawley rediagnoses severe/very severe ME patients who get worse with activity as pervasive refusal syndrome. My local...

The studies claiming that have huge dropout rates.

Thesis Exploring overcontrolled personality traits in individuals with fibromyalgia and chronic fatigue syndrome, 2023, Horton

Agreed. I’ve been railing against these people being allowed to call themselves Dr for years. I’ve seen clinical psych doctorates (in non-ME/CFS areas) that were literally based on 10 people interviewed in a focus group. It’s really harmful. It’s especially irritating when I think back on the...

Thesis Exploring overcontrolled personality traits in individuals with fibromyalgia and chronic fatigue syndrome, 2023, Horton

That’s a DClinPsych thesis. Generally they are of a much lower standard than a real PhD. Clinical psychology professional doctorates are mostly coursework and placements.

Typing myalgic encephalomyelitis by infection at onset: A DecodeME study, 2023, Bretherick et al

Need to be careful with half-baked diagnoses of depression by GPs. Mood swings that occur from hour to hour or day to day have nothing to do with clinical depression.

    Open Medicine Foundation (OMF)

Moved post That's what PhD students and postdocs are for. No one expects the project lead to sit there drafting papers. I'm sorry but the reasons that the OMF offers to the general public for doing things the wrong way make no sense. Maybe they are trying to appeal to the unconventional...

Good point. He probably also believes that MH conditions aren't real/disabling.

He should get sued by everyone whose claim he has assessed.

Why functional neurological disorder is not feigning or malingering 2023 Edwards, Yogarajah and Stone

Very weak article overall. When skeptics point out that FND symptoms look exactly like what you see in someone feigning those symptoms, all they can point to are n=10 sorts of functional neuroimaging studies and the clinical impression that’s it’s hard to fake symptoms for many years and have it...

Review Mitochondrial and metabolic features of salugenesis and the healing cycle, 2023, Naviaux

That’s really disturbing. Implies they are covering up negative results.

Review Mitochondrial and metabolic features of salugenesis and the healing cycle, 2023, Naviaux

Whatever happened to the replication study Naviaux was doing years ago as a follow up to his 2016 metabolomics paper? It’s been 10 years or radio silence so it’s safe to assume the findings did not replicate even after years of torturing the data.

This is exactly what POTS isn’t. Has this genius even bothered to look up diagnostic criteria?

Call for psychosis treatment overhaul after evidence of autoimmune trigger

I don’t have any specific links but it has been known for decades that schizophrenia risk is increased by maternal flu in early pregnancy. Knowing that something has an immune cause doesn’t imply the solution is immune treatment. An immune trigger can apparently set off a chain of events that...

Reddit - Interesting posts on Reddit, including what some doctors say about ME/CFS

When you’re biased and filled with hate and prejudice, it’s easy to convince yourself that even the most blatantly physical problems like POTS are due to anxiety. I’m sure everyone remembers that crazy paper from a few months ago where they argued it was fear of standing.

Functional Neurological Disorder (FND) - articles, social media and discussion

Carson’s statements are especially false and misleading because CBT has not only been conclusively demonstrated not to work for ME/CFS (PACE) but also for FND. The CODES trial for FND was a PACE-like effort led by the usual KCL crowd and the primary endpoint was negative despite the huge sample...

Call for psychosis treatment overhaul after evidence of autoimmune trigger

Excuse me? Discovering and treating neurosyphilis cleared out a sizeable proportion of long stay asylum cases with psychosis. “General paresis of the insane” Reading to the end of the article we discover why this nothingburger is being reported on. She needs participants for her trial! Of...
