Preprint Dissecting the genetic complexity of myalgic encephalomyelitis/chronic fatigue syndrome via deep learning-powered genome analysis, 2025, Zhang+

Nice find @forestglip and what a story! This has reminded me to try throwing the top 115 genes at my scripts and see what comes up. And I need to reread the analysis you did. Here’s the silhouette metrics, a couple of peaks but also looks maybe quite fragmented, will need to dig in some more...

Nail clipper and nail file recommendations

I’ve thought about them but have no idea how to choose one, any recommendations? Thanks, have found some decent looking Besox clippers. Quite fancy keeping my fingertips though! :)

Beyond COVID-19 in people with HIV: Specific miRNA expression profile persist after SARS-CoV-2 clearance, 2026, Grande-García et al.

Thanks for digging in to this. Something seemed off but I wasn’t sure if it was me or the paper! Great to have an explanation.

Preprint Identification of Novel Reproducible Combinatorial Genetic Risk Factors for [ME] in [DecodeME Cohort] and Commonalities with [LC], 2025, Sardell+

Mainly silhouette, I also looked at SSE and the heat-maps visually. I've never heard of NbClust. Looks like an R package and I’m not at all familiar with R. Would be really interested to hear what you find using it though. (Btw, for some reason half of your message didn’t show up for me, looks...

Preprint Identification of Novel Reproducible Combinatorial Genetic Risk Factors for [ME] in [DecodeME Cohort] and Commonalities with [LC], 2025, Sardell+

I couldn’t find a way to automate creation of these and include in the report, so did it manually, but here’s each cluster of genes on string-db for people to experiment with if they wish. Clustering with k=5 PrecisionLife DecodeME data, k5 z, cluster 1 PrecisionLife DecodeME data, k5 z...

Human Olfactory Receptors: Novel Cellular Functions Outside of the Nose, 2018, Maßberg et al

It would! OLFM4 isn’t even in the PrecisionLife gene list. Only CSE1L and DCC are in both I think. Not sure what to make of that or if it’s worth looking at a combined gene set to see what turns up…

Human Olfactory Receptors: Novel Cellular Functions Outside of the Nose, 2018, Maßberg et al

Rather than starting another thread, this is one of the papers quoted, and one of many from the Pluznick Lab at Johns Hopkins, here’s a list of their publications in this area and a quote from their website Olfactory receptor responding to gut microbiota-derived signals plays a role in renin...

Those 3 also looks like they have the highest FDRs and visually are above 0.05 although I think they mention using that as the cutoff? Am I reading that right? Just wondering if it’s relevant, only recently started learning about false discovery rates!

Nail clipper and nail file recommendations

Does anyone have any recommendations? I’m looking for good quality, easy to use and will last. Sometimes cutting and filing can be too much effort but when up to it, or if broken up over time, it’s a little bit of self csre which can be quite enjoyable. So worth getting some good tools and am...

Review Role of Ectopic Olfactory Receptors in the Regulation of the Cardiovascular–Kidney–Metabolic Axis, 2024, Beito et al

Another read on olfactory receptors. This review paints a picture of wider implications in cardiovascular, inflammatory processes, kidney and metabolism. It also talks about the signalling pathways. Could have some clues to why even if not a causal factor these mechanisms could be affected and...

Review Role of Ectopic Olfactory Receptors in the Regulation of the Cardiovascular–Kidney–Metabolic Axis, 2024, Beito et al

Role of Ectopic Olfactory Receptors in the Regulation of the Cardiovascular–Kidney–Metabolic Axis Abstract Olfactory receptors (ORs) represent one of the largest yet least investigated families of G protein-coupled receptors in mammals. While initially believed to be functionally restricted...

Human Olfactory Receptors: Novel Cellular Functions Outside of the Nose, 2018, Maßberg et al

I became interested in olfactory receptors as a couple of related genes (OR5V1 OR5AC2) cropped up in the PrecisionLife candidate genes and were flagged in one of the clusters in the analysis I was doing. It may not be significant, but it’s interesting. They are used for far more than smelling…...

Human Olfactory Receptors: Novel Cellular Functions Outside of the Nose, 2018, Maßberg et al

Human Olfactory Receptors: Novel Cellular Functions Outside of the Nose Maßberg, Désirée; Hatt, Hanns Abstract Olfactory receptors (ORs) are not exclusively expressed in the olfactory sensory neurons; they are also observed outside of the olfactory system in all other human tissues tested to...

Why is showering so PEM/OI inducing

It just occurred to me there’s probably a lot of sensory things going on when showering. A number of people have mentioned the elements. There’s thinking, coordination, a body having lots of touch signals, temperature changes, balance, noise, even movement/visual things. Looking at this from a...

Streaming nose first thing in the morning - allergies? Bug? Some weird ME/CFS thing?

No idea I’m afraid @Sasha but I have periods where my nose just starts running. Sometimes when I get up first thing, sometimes after eating, or just around the same time in the afternoon. No idea what causes these strange patches. Similarly with eyes watering (although other times they’re dry)...

Keeping clean when severe - a thread for tips

Yeah, my feet are grim atm. But when I am up to lying on the sofabed I use the bin from an old paper shredder, partially filled with water, with one of these in the bottom https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B004KX1OK8 and soak my feet in it and wiggle my toes a bit. Someone brings me this and after...

Keeping clean when severe - a thread for tips

The talk of showers reminded me I’d been thinking of sharing tips for keeping clean when you are unable to. It took me a long time to adapt, experiment snd learn, when at my best I manage to keep clean well, when less good it’s harder. I thought it would be useful for us to share approaches...

Why is showering so PEM/OI inducing

It’s been many years since I was able to but even in my early years of ME/CFS it would be a trigger. Even if sitting on the floor, the getting to the bathroom, washing, drying, getting back from the bathroom… I assumed the sustained activity and being upright was the reason, some other movements...

Review [+ Case Report] [POT] With [CF] After HPV Vaccination as Part of the “Autoimmune/Auto-inflammatory Syndrome Induced by Adjuvants”, 2014, Tomljenovic+

Yeah, acknowledging and understanding the rare reactions better (as well as increasing understanding of coincidences as @Jonathan Edwards has highlighted) would seem a sensible approach I think. Having significant changes in health and quality of life just dismissed doesn’t help anyone and only...
