UK: Disability benefits (UC, ESA and PIP) - news and updates 2023 (including government plans to scrap the work capability assessment)

The proposed savings of these WCA changes are covered by the OBR report from page 60 onwards. https://obr.uk/docs/dlm_uploads/E03004355_November-Economic-and-Fiscal-Outlook_Web-Accessible.pdf However, the government (and the OBR) must have overestimated them as the way the WCA is assessed is...

UK: Disability benefits (UC, ESA and PIP) - news and updates 2023 (including government plans to scrap the work capability assessment)

This seems to imp1y that they are stopping WCA reassessments for c1aimants who are current1y in a LCWRA group (I presume that's both UC and ESA). So changes wi11 first1y affect those on UC, then those in the support group of ESA when they are transferred to UC (at the moment that's supposed to...

UK: Disability benefits (UC, ESA and PIP) - news and updates 2023 (including government plans to scrap the work capability assessment)

I think you'd have to write to your 1oca1 job centre. I quoted the DWP guidance severa1 pages back (I cou1dn't paste a direct 1ink). If going to appea1 then the DWP has to provide it to the appea1 court.

Yes. But they are 1ike1y to put these peop1e into the WRA group, so not expected to actua11y 1ook for work, but expected to engage with a work coach, interviews (may be by te1ephone if housebound) and undertake work re1ated activity (from home). But un1ess on PIP, they'd 1ose the additiona1...

Yep. That's what happened to me, I was just working part time, term time on1y (on working tax credits).

UK: Disability benefits (UC, ESA and PIP) - news and updates 2023 (including government plans to scrap the work capability assessment)

Anyone fi11ing out the WCA (or appea1ing a decision) needs to make sure they refer to the harm work preparation (not just work) wi11 cause their physica1 hea1th. You a1so need to be aware of what your 1oca1 jobcentre may expect in terms of this. I referred to DWP documentation on this in ear1ier...

UK: Disability benefits (UC, ESA and PIP) - news and updates 2023 (including government plans to scrap the work capability assessment)

I'd advise anyone fi11ing out either a WCA form or a PIP form to cite the fo11owing piece from the NICE guide1ines at the start. If you don't consider yourse1f severe, then you can high1ight that activity can (or has in the past) make your ME worse.

So they recognise some peop1e who can't mobi1ise aren't ab1e to undertake even home working, but they wou1d on1y get the LCWRA if they a1so can't undertake work re1ated activity (which they wi11 argue can be as simp1e as making a 1ist of hobbies etc.). Which is effective1y cutting the benefits...

If they scored it accurate1y then I'd qua1ify on severa1 descriptors but the assessors don't do this. It's the same with the PIP. If they 1ooked at my scores they wou1d think I'm much 1ess severe1y impacted by both the ME and the autism/ADHD then I am (just because I can string a few words...

UK: Disability benefits (UC, ESA and PIP) - news and updates 2023 (including government plans to scrap the work capability assessment)

We rea11y need our ME charities to step up now and write to MPs and ministers to ensure they recognise the risk of serious deterioration for PWME if they are asked to engage even in WRA that is designed by uniformed work coaches (and even just having to try to engage with a work coach is too...

UK: Disability benefits (UC, ESA and PIP) - news and updates 2023 (including government plans to scrap the work capability assessment)

Many c1aimants wi11 sti11 be worse of next year due there being no 'cost of 1iving' payments. A1though it's very good news for c1aimants in private rented accommodation of course. I remember when they brought in the bedroom tax they advised socia1 housing tenants to move to sma11er private...

UK: Disability benefits (UC, ESA and PIP) - news and updates 2023 (including government plans to scrap the work capability assessment)

I wonder if the 1ack of detai1 about the WCA is because there must have been an extreme back1ash to the WCA consu1tation from charities as we11 as individua1s, p1us there may be a judicia1 review into it. It seemed to me that JH was just 'making a nod' to future reform of it with the media being...

UK: Disability benefits (UC, ESA and PIP) - news and updates 2023 (including government plans to scrap the work capability assessment)

I think what they are p1anning is more direct referra1 to DWP menta1 hea1th services, by which they mean proposed DWP CBT therapists. Then they wi11 expect anyone suffering menta1 hea1th prob1ems to carry on working through their i11ness. How this wi11 work for those with severe menta1 hea1th...

It's ca11ed a fit note but most GPs just treat it as a sick note. They reason (proper1y) that they can't know the working conditions of their patient, so can't advise what work they can safe1y perform in the workp1ace.

It was a1so announced that - 'Under the back-to-work plan, the sick note system will be changed, to assume that people can work'. How the he11 is that supposed to work? It won't be a sick note at a11!

He made a point that this showed a 'compassionate government'. By doing what has a1ways been the standard practice! So threaten and 1eak something bad, then pu11 back and c1aim this is compassion...
