I’m not here to defend the DualDur people, but is worth noting that basically everyone agrees that Lyme diagnostics are totally bunk, and that we need better tests. The US government is investing (not enough) money in this, and the DualDur project looks to have had some EU funding.
Potentially of note, a new approach to microscopy-based diagnosis of Lyme: https://lymediagnostics.com/
I don't know anything beyond what is posted on their website.
Yeah, I too am very surprised to find myself sympathizing with Ross Douthat, of all people.
a couple more excepts from the book have been published online. They appear to go into the alt-med world including unfortunately quackery like rife machines.
Maybe there is a way to funnel some of the...
I think the most interesting part here is a potentially novel physical finding in these microclots. I don't understand the science well enough but it sounds like this is a new phenomenon of some sorts, that they're still trying to work out.
But I agree, the results so far are receiving way more...
I don't understand the point of making blanket, absolute statements like "Physical activity is safe, even for people living with symptoms from multiple medical conditions."
At first I thought that "multiple medical conditions" must be some established concept that I was not familiar with, but...
Wow, frankly horrendous media coverage from what I can glean. So much space being given to the exact people who should now be rightly discredited and forced to crawl back into the holes from which they came.
it’s almost like the media doesn’t even attempt to determine the veracity of what is...
Thank you so much @Hutan for providing these summaries.
Some random comments:
Frustrating that this is at odds with messaging from OMF and others, who say that NIH won't fund promising research on e.g. the nanoneedle. I guess it all comes down to a different definition of "good quality"...
Interestingly the patient’s perspective on these events is not reported in the article. The doctors were worried that the patient was using “unprescribed opioids” and that they were at risk of being arrested. I bet that the patient was just pissed that their new doctor was too inept to properly...
The way this is being handled — the “primarily on social media” line and the deletion of Facebook threads — I would describe as “shameful”.
“social media” is especially tone deaf… think about who else talks about the crazy patients harassing them on social media…
I thought this part was interesting:
I don't really know how OMF works, but this seems to suggest that they have a lot of cash on hand, but are not spending it... for some reason or another?
I wonder if anything from this study will ever see the light of day.
Interestingly, it is now showing as "recruiting" once again: https://clinicaltrials.gov/ct2/show/NCT02669212
Does OMF not publish annual reports? Many (most?) nonprofits usually release a nicely-formatted PDF each year with high level overviews of their activities, impacts, financials.
