Paul Garner on Long Covid and ME/CFS - BMJ articles and other media.

Thanks for the mention of David Bell's work, @Denise and Snowdrop. It was interesting to read that thread in the context of Garner's assertions about normality.

Paul Garner on Long Covid and ME/CFS - BMJ articles and other media.

I also found Paul Garner's suggestion that he's been on a two year journey, and the content from the 10 minute mark interesting: It seems that Paul Garner is not working the hours he used to work. I'm reminded of the young people in an ME/CFS followup study by Katherine Rowe. She found that...

Prevalence of Aspergillus-Derived Mycotoxins (Ochratoxin, Aflatoxin, and Gliotoxin) and Their Distribution in the Urinalysis of ME/CFS, 2022, Yu Wu

I think the second reviewer (anonymous) gets to the heart of the issue with the paper better, the issue that forum members also identified as the key problem: Edit - although I take on the board the point some have made that it is possible that people with ME/CFS might have an abnormal...

Prevalence of Aspergillus-Derived Mycotoxins (Ochratoxin, Aflatoxin, and Gliotoxin) and Their Distribution in the Urinalysis of ME/CFS, 2022, Yu Wu

It's not really even a study. It's a report of medical records. Which, in itself, is fine. Yes, the prescribing of unevidenced treatments based on a test that is almost certainly irrelevant is a problem. But the testing is also a problem. The clinicians convinced people to have their...

The Netherlands - €28.5 million ME/CFS research program - ZonMW funding awards announced April 2023

Here's the text of the ZonMw call in English https://www.zonmw.nl/fileadmin/zonmw/documenten/Corporate/Subsidies/PDF_s/NEW_Call_Consortia_Cohort_Research_MECFS.pdf It's a pretty big deal. I hope some of our members are involved in the consortia preparing proposals. Oh, also note that the...

‘I can’t cope with multiple inputs’: a qualitative study of the lived experience of ‘brain fog’ after COVID-19 , 2022, Greenhalgh et al

When I read material by Trish Greenhalgh, I want to make a 'hlagh' noise too. The title is fixed now.

    Testing for exposure to mold/mould/mycotoxins

The link in the Merritt Wellness Center page goes to a pretty interesting CDC article with references, copied below: The takeaways do indeed seem to be that at the time of writing, there was no FDA-approved diagnostic test for mycotoxins in human urine mycotoxins are found in the urine of...

    Testing for exposure to mold/mould/mycotoxins

A recent paper reported on two tests for mycotoxins (toxins produced by fungal species) that patients of Nova Southeastern University’s (NSU) Institute of Neuro-Immune Medicine (INIM) clinic in Florida had been asked to do. The clinic is prescribing treatments (glutathione and charcoal) on the...

Prevalence of Aspergillus-Derived Mycotoxins (Ochratoxin, Aflatoxin, and Gliotoxin) and Their Distribution in the Urinalysis of ME/CFS, 2022, Yu Wu

Yes, and it's quite possible that they do. There are hardly any studies of ME/CFS incidence in populations on low income countries. I have heard quite a few people from high income countries who report getting ME/CFS during or immediately after a trip to a low income part of the world. My...

News from Aotearoa/New Zealand and the Pacific Islands

The title is just where the problems start. Hawkins manages to trip over a remarkable number of ME/CFS landmines in that one short piece (e.g. I count at least 11 items of misinformation or statements that will mislead in just the two paragraphs copied below). Given that she seems to write for...

    Strongyloidiasis - nematode infection

CDC info here and here "Strongyloidiasis is a disease caused by a nematode, or a roundworm, in the genus Strongyloides. Though there are over 40 species within this genus that can infect birds, reptiles, amphibians, livestock and other primates, Strongyloides stercoralis is the primary species...

New NICE guideline on chronic fatigue syndrome: more ideology than science? 2022, Flottorp et al

This seems to be a key argument that has been put around after the NICE guideline was published. I think many of the BPS proponents (and people who might regard themselves as neutral parties also) genuinely do not understand the enormous bias created by a combination of a questionnaire on 'how...

Targeting the Monocytic-Endothelial-Platelet Axis with Maraviroc and Pravastatin as a Therapeutic Option to Treat Long COVID/ Patterson/PP

That's probably a bit unfair. The study probably helped them develop their ideas and might give potential funders of a bigger blinded trial confidence. They say: It looks like they understand that this isn't proof that the treatments work.
