Molecular mechanisms of stress-induced reactivation in mumps virus condensates, 2023, Xiaojie Zhang et al

German research Thanks for posting @Mij. If I had to pick one theory on the cause of ME/CFS, I think it would probably be something to do with reactivations of pathogens that have been sitting latent in cells. I'm only a few paragraphs into the paper, but I think this is looking to be worth...

USA: National Institutes of Health (NIH) intramural ME/CFS study

I wonder if the slowness to bring the results into the public is because of a desire to get all the ducks in a row, to make sure things are unassailable so that people within the NIH and in politics who don't believe in ME/CFS as a biological illness can't easily attack it? A sort of going slow...

Autoantibodies against muscarinic cholinergic receptor in chronic fatigue syndrome, 2003, Tanaka et al

I wondered about that, but Figure 1A plots the individual results for the healthy controls, and they look to be quite tightly clustered.

USA: National Institutes of Health (NIH) intramural ME/CFS study

Walitt's views were pretty bad, and, extraordinarily, enough people with decision-making power in the NIH thought that Edward Shorter's extremely misogynistic views about CFS were interesting enough to have him come to the NIH during the ME/CFS study. So, I think some concern is warranted...

Autoantibodies against muscarinic cholinergic receptor in chronic fatigue syndrome, 2003, Tanaka et al

Thanks @CRG! Dotted line is the healthy control mean plus 2 standard deviations. The chart indicates that there is a clear increase in the level of anti-CHRM1 antibodies in about half the CFS participants, but not in healthy controls. It looks pretty nice. "cpm" is counts per minute...

Structure Elucidation and Biological Evaluation of Maitotoxin-3, a Homologue of Gambierone, from Gambierdiscus belizeanus, 2019, Boente-Juncal et al

https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC6409949/ Gambierdiscus species are the producers of the marine toxins ciguatoxins and maitotoxins which cause worldwide human intoxications recognized as Ciguatera Fish Poisoning. A deep chemical investigation of a cultured strain of G. belizeanus...

Transcriptomic Analysis of Ciguatoxin-Induced Changes in Gene Expression in Primary Cultures of Mice Cortical Neurons, 2018, Rubiolo et al

From an information sheet about Ciguatera https://www.whoi.edu/science/B/redtide/illness/ciguatera_fish_poisoning.html One of the toxins present in varying amounts in Ciguatera fish poisoning, that we haven't discussed before is maitotoxin. It increases calcium ion influx through excitable...

USA: NIH National Institutes of Health news - latest ME/CFS webinar 14 Jan 2025

A reminder about this call - it will be interesting to hear what the NIH is saying on 'updates on ME/CFS-related research activities'. Note the need to register in advance.

Preprint [Preprint] Exosome-associated Mitochondrial DNA Elevated in... ME/CFS and Stimulates... Microglia to Secrete IL-1β, 2023, Theoharides, Natelson et al

My brain has moved to treacle mode. Yeah, I edited out that sentence about them knowing the concentration of the 7S DNA, as I wasn't sure.

I'm not surprised that you say this, as, the study looked pretty patchy to even me, who doesn't know the technicalities. They may have standardised the amount of DNA applied to each sample of microglia. But yes, there's quite a lot that they have not told us.

Preprint [Preprint] Exosome-associated Mitochondrial DNA Elevated in... ME/CFS and Stimulates... Microglia to Secrete IL-1β, 2023, Theoharides, Natelson et al

[Crossposted] I've got to stop, I'll have to come back to this. The last figure is Figure 3 which gives the amount of IL-1b produced by microglia cells exposed to the exosomes from healthy and ME/CFS people. These are the pooled samples. This study isn't feeling very solid. There might be...

So, serum for an unknown number of people with ME/CFS before and after exercise and serum for an unknown number of healthy controls, presumably just before exercise. The order in these charts is Healthy Controls: ME/CFS before exercise: ME/CFS after exercise Figure 1b shows that total exosome...

Lived experience of patients with Long COVID: a qualitative study in the UK 2023 Thomas et al

Rapid responses to the paper are possible, if anyone has the energy and inclination to quote some of the papers that have found significant numbers of Long covid people meet ME/CFS criteria. We have a tag "lc=me/cfs" that can be put on papers that assess LC patients against ME/CFS criteria...

World ME Alliance Factsheet on ME

Yes, that's interesting. It's a problem. Reading about that recent COFFI meeting where the BPS people were wanting to attack these ideas of extremely low recovery rates in ME/CFS, I do think we need to improve in our educational materials and things like the CCC. It's a more complicated story...

Crowdfunding: Trial By Error: Reporting on ME, ME/CFS, long Covid, and "Medically Unexplained Symptoms", Spring 2023

Oh, yes, that would be great. I could definitely see David on the international literary event circuit too - I reckon there'd be a lot of interest.

Social inequalities in aggravating factors of somatic symptom persistence (SOMA.SOC): study protocol... 2023 von dem Knesebeck et al

Are they seriously going to cold call people, targeting migrants who may or may not have good German language skills, with the aim of getting 2400 people to tell them about their bowel function? And quiz them about their health literacy, their personal experiences with their IBS, including the...
