New Zealand 2023: ME Support's Long Covid online resource

Video 2: ME/CFS and Long Covid are so hard to present in a way that looks credible. And there are a lot of ways to get things wrong. I thought this video was fairly good, but there were some problems. There's the usual one of presenting a list of causes of Long Covid, in this case, as if they...

New Zealand 2023: ME Support's Long Covid online resource

https://www.mesupport.org.nz/longcovidhelp One video down, and thankfully it is looking pretty good. There are quite a lot of Māori words that have come into general use here in NZ. I think overseas people will understand from the context though.

The relationship between interpersonal violence in adulthood and mental health: a longitudinal study based on the Northern Swedish Cohort 2023 Ziaei

I assume FFS was meant to be FSS (functional somatic symptoms), and that these two instances are typos? Perhaps a Freudian slip? Either way, FFS (for f***'s sake) is exactly my reaction to this. Just as an example, Hip Pain in a measure of psychosomaticism? Does that mean that people with...

Combination of whole body cryotherapy with static stretching ... reduces fatigue and improves functioning of the [ANS] in CFS, 2022, Kujawski et al

I think the healthy controls were there to provide a baseline for the cardio and cognitive measures. But yes, it does make for a muddle - it sort of makes it sound like it was a proper trial with controls, when there was no treatment control.

Combination of whole body cryotherapy with static stretching ... reduces fatigue and improves functioning of the [ANS] in CFS, 2022, Kujawski et al

Thinking about this overnight, this study makes me a bit angry. We are all so desperate; if anyone made cryotherapy easy to access and affordable to people with ME/CFS, I'm sure there would be a long queue of people ready to try it. I might even be among them. There doesn't need to be any...

Review article: What is really ‘Long COVID’?, 2023, Szabo et al

I see most of the authors are based in California, but the last author, Veronica Muller, has a Hungarian connection: School of Medicine, American University of Health Sciences, 1600 East Hill St., Signal Hill/Long Beach, CA, 90755, USA Department of Pulmonology, Semmelweis University, Budapest...

Open Survey: Assessing Attitudes Toward Case Definitions: Consensus Building Amongst Researchers, Physicians, Patients, and Activists - Lenny Jason

Yes, I agree. Trying to refine criteria when we don't even have basic epidemiology, let alone biology, is mostly wasting time. I'd prefer it if Professor Jason focussed more on really good epidemiological studies rather than this naming stuff. I understand that it can feel a bit like a chicken...

Review article: What is really ‘Long COVID’?, 2023, Szabo et al

How could they get that so wrong? It just takes a quick google e.g. Long-term sequelae following previous coronavirus epidemics, 2021

Combination of whole body cryotherapy with static stretching ... reduces fatigue and improves functioning of the [ANS] in CFS, 2022, Kujawski et al

Discussion I'm not sure that they can conclude this, because I don't know how long they had the participants report PEM and other symptom effects for after the cryotherapy and stretches. I found the whole thing rather vague, unconvincing and frustrating. It's possible it could work - brief...

Combination of whole body cryotherapy with static stretching ... reduces fatigue and improves functioning of the [ANS] in CFS, 2022, Kujawski et al

Sample selection We've seen these extreme losses in screening from Polish research before. Of the 238 people excluded, 180 did not meet (even) the Fukuda criteria; 30 had a 'psychological/psychiatric impairment'; in 174, another diagnosis or fatigue was not the main complaint. Edit - The...

Combination of whole body cryotherapy with static stretching ... reduces fatigue and improves functioning of the [ANS] in CFS, 2022, Kujawski et al

Certainly the ideas about prevalence and diagnostic criteria in this paper look worth talking about. The problems with English in that second sentence is representative of the paper. Here's another sentence with difficult language; I think probably every second sentence has at least one error...

Open Survey: Assessing Attitudes Toward Case Definitions: Consensus Building Amongst Researchers, Physicians, Patients, and Activists - Lenny Jason

Yeah, when I answered those questions, I assumed it meant having defined subtypes e.g. for severity: mild, moderate, severe, rather than excluding subtypes. But I agree, that set of questions is confusing. For duration, I was thinking of the Hornig study, the less than 3 years; more than 3...

Open Survey: Assessing Attitudes Toward Case Definitions: Consensus Building Amongst Researchers, Physicians, Patients, and Activists - Lenny Jason

I thought the survey was ok. There is room for comments. I'm not too sure how useful the results will be. If a majority of people want a particular diagnostic criteria used, or think ME is or isn't the same as CFS, will it change anyone's mind? They are aiming for a sample of 2000 people...

Physical Activity Effects on Muscle Fatigue in Sport in Active Adults with Long COVID-19: An Observational Study 2023, Coscia et al.

The authors seem to flop about in numerous paragraphs on the question as to whether exercise helps Long covid and, particularly, ME/CFS. It's as if two different authors with two different ideas took charge of different paragraphs. They seem to come down to the conclusion that exercise is good...

Physical Activity Effects on Muscle Fatigue in Sport in Active Adults with Long COVID-19: An Observational Study 2023, Coscia et al.

That's how they defined ME/CFS-like symptoms - fatigue (or muscle fatigue? it isn't clear) symptoms greater than a 5 on the 1 to 10 scale; mild but not major impairment of cognitive processes and lack of restorative sleep. Around 7% of their sample had that at the one year mark. That's a...
