    UK: Walk for ME

Just bumping this, a very good initiative. The website reports that nearly 200,000 pounds has been raised for ME/CFS research.

Trial Report Possible Markers For Myalgic Encephalomyelitis / CFS Developed In Long Covid: Utility Of Serum Ferritin And Insulin-like Growth Factor-I,2023,Yamamoto

For what it's worth, my measured ferritin levels have been very normal during my illness. My son's ferritin level was actually low, below the normal range, when he first got ME/CFS. He was prescribed an iron supplement; his measured levels have been normal since.

Functional Neurological Disorder is a Feminist Issue 2023, McLoughlin, Chalder et al

Just to clarify in case it is needed, I found the use of the Atwood quote in this paper distasteful, maybe that's the wrong word, I found it incredibly wrong. Because Atwood has said the opposite to what people like Chalder have advocated. To co-opt Atwood's credentials as a feminist and...

Functional Neurological Disorder is a Feminist Issue 2023, McLoughlin, Chalder et al

In one breath they say that people with FND need better care, but they also seem to want to reduce investigations that might identify other causes of the reported symptoms. They include this quote in the paper. Which illustrates just how limited their understanding is. Of course things that...

Functional Neurological Disorder is a Feminist Issue 2023, McLoughlin, Chalder et al

This paper is such a perversion. FND diagnoses are stable partly because, even when the person is later conclusively found to be suffering from some catastrophic neurological or endocrinological disease, the people who initially diagnosed them with FND continue to claim that there is a...

Functional Neurological Disorder is a Feminist Issue 2023, McLoughlin, Chalder et al

Wow. To have Chalder, who has probably done as much as nearly anyone to reduce the level of credibility women have when presenting to their doctors, telling the world about feminism in health care is truly monstrous. Yes, I saw a comment by someone in social media lately promoting FND as a...

Preprint: Treatment of Long COVID symptoms with triple anticoagulant therapy 2023 Laubshder, Pretorius et al

I don't think an RCT has to be large to be useful. A small one can identify things that are worth more study. And actually, maybe fewer, better quality trials when it comes to treatments would be a good thing, be less wasteful and lead to less misinformation. Maybe researchers can make better...

Preprint: Treatment of Long COVID symptoms with triple anticoagulant therapy 2023 Laubshder, Pretorius et al

Obviously things will vary from country to country and possibly from ethics board to ethics board. The system needs to be improved so that there is more consistency. In my country, there is a system for overseeing ethics boards, there is accountability. It's imperfect, but there is a...

Association of Treatment With Nirmatrelvir and the Risk of Post–COVID-19 Condition, 2023, Yan Xie, PhD et al

This of course is a big question. Paxlovid seems to be a simple enough treatment. With the lobbying might of Pfizer and the enormous socio-economic impact pushing decision-makers to act, there will surely be trials giving it to people without risk factors for progression to severe disease...

Association of Treatment With Nirmatrelvir and the Risk of Post–COVID-19 Condition, 2023, Yan Xie, PhD et al

Treatment reduced the risk of severe acute disease enormously in this health-compromised sample (halved the rate of death; hospitalisation rates were 75% of untreated people). The post-acute disease symptoms that were reduced included symptoms that are part of ME/CFS. It's a shame that...

Association of Treatment With Nirmatrelvir and the Risk of Post–COVID-19 Condition, 2023, Yan Xie, PhD et al

From the abstract, it looks like a very interesting study. Of course not all post-covid illness is ME/CFS-like, but there is reporting on specific symptoms including fatigue and malaise, and dysautonomia. I look forward to seeing if the drug reduced ME/CFS symptoms. The sample is heavily...

Trial Report Outpatient treatment of Covid-19 and the development of Long Covid..., 2023, Bramante et al

Yes, and as we noted earlier, we don't know what "Long covid" meant in the minds of the doctors who diagnosed it. The finding of a useful effect from metformin may or may not have much bearing on the incidence of ME/CFS-like illness.

Trial Report Outpatient treatment of Covid-19 and the development of Long Covid..., 2023, Bramante et al

The new version of the paper just has the cumulative incidence chart for Metformin and the placebo in the main text. Figure S3 is the cumulative incidence chart for all of the treatment arms, but in this latest preprint version, there are no lines on the chart. This suggests that they might...
