Easy ways to provide dessert for people would be tinned fruit and packs of concentrated jelly. Sponge flan bases, tinned fruit and the instant packet glazing gel is another easy option, as well tinned or powder custard, tinned Abrosia rice etc. Really, they could have asked any food bank for...
Technically my parcels have each contained 2 tins of vegetables. The first contained a large tin of mushy peas, and a can of chopped tomatoes, the second a large can of kidney beans and a can of plum tomatoes. There has been no tinned fruit or anything that could pass as a 'dessert'. The tea and...
I had my second government food parcel. This time the potatoes were green and some of the carrots were going rotten. The bread had been previously frozen and was drying out. There is almost zero protein - one tin of Frey Bentos chicken meatballs (17% chicken) and a small tin of tuna in brine...
I bought a homemade mask off Ebay, which was very well made but did allow a lot of breathe through the top.
So I bought a pack of aluminium nose bridges off Ebay, that stick on to the front of masks.
I wasn't sure how well they would stay on, but they stick very well and greatly improve...
I didn't realise that milkman now deliver a whole range of goods, including organic fruit and veg, artisan bread and dairy-free items! I just checked my local company, they aren't currently taking new customers but are hoping to soon - I will definitely sign up for an account when they do. I...
I have a lot of respect for Steve Reicher - he is one of the originators of 'participant based research' in social psychology. I met him at a BPS Social Psychology conference as an undergraduate. I would have been happy to have him as my PhD supervisor when I was looking at doing this 20 odd...
Oh, and my letter also stated that if the driver were to find the box still outside the front door when they came back a week later, then they have a special number to call. Very reassuring to know the government is so concerned for its people's welfare...
Mine just appeared without me telephoning or requesting it and came with a letter stating I will now get one on the same day every week unless I cancel it (by re-signing up to the national list ticking I have help to get food). I had signed up again on the national list after I received my NHS...
If anyone is struggling with the increased costs of getting food, they may wish to sign this petition, which seeks parity for claimants on the legacy benefits (e.g. ESA) with new claimants receiving the £20 weekly increase on their UC claim...
My council don't even have an email address! They have a single point of contact telephone number for everything now (including the council housing and repairs) which I can't use. They've also put on their website that they won't be dealing with any mail enquiries as they've closed their...
I've just learned which company supply the 'extremely vulnerable' food parcels. They have nothing to do with food banks, so I'm very happy to be able to give a portion of my boxes to the local food bank and hence help other vulnerable local people who are in need mainly due to extreme poverty...
I found this site that offers whole grains and seeds, useful if you want to add these to plain white or wholemeal bread flour to make more interesting bread. They also sell other pulses and seeds:

If you've not used it before, it's worth buying 'filtered' milk, like Cravendale or a supermarket's own brand. It can usually be kept at least 10-14 days in the fridge and I think tastes better than 'normal' milk. My preferred milk is organic unfiltered milk but this often has only 5 days fridge...
I got my Doves flour box today and was very pleased with it. It contained 6 different flours, including a rye and a malted one. My daughter also managed to pick me up a couple of white spelt flours when she was in Morrisons, so I'm now sorted for flour for the next few months.
I also found a...
This will be a result of them being picked up individually and flagged by their GP/GP records/other specialist rather than any change in national strategy. The shielded list is being updated each week as more people who were missed by the national NHS algorithm-based data trawl are added by...
You can buy 15kg dry food containers on Amazon. Some are aimed at storing rice or flour, but only seem to come from abroad:
Or you could use a pet food storage container. I use the Curver ones for storing my dry cat food (available from Zooplus), which I buy in bulk. I also have some scoops...
I've seen a few 16kg sacks of flour being offered on Amazon, but I didn't check the delivery prices as I'd never get through that much. I rarely eat bread, just use flour in pastry, shortbread or cakes, which I'm only occasionally well enough to bake.
