"ME/CFS and deconditioning"
Quote:
A previous post examined the Wessely School hypothesis that ME/CFS is caused by unhelpful beliefs. This idea was exploded as a myth. Here I examine a second Wessely School hypothesis (H2) that states:
Deconditioning causes, or exacerbates the symptoms of...
I've never heard about this institute before either. Noticed a tweet about this paper on twitter that was retweeted by Long COVID Physio and thought it was interesting to see among other a call for a Long Covid minister. Seems they've at least involved some patients during the process.
Tony Blair - Institute for global change
A Long-Term Plan for Long Covid
Conclusion
It is almost six months since we last wrote on Long Covid. In one sense, a number of things have changed, with progress having been made in certain areas.
We now have a recognised diagnosis for Long Covid...
Business Insider interviews physical therapist Noah Greenspan from New York about long-haulers. He has created a bootcamp "to help long-haulers manage their symptoms". CFS is mentioned in the article several times. He seems to be confusing PEM with fight-or-flight-mode.
Business Insider: Most...
"Unhelpful beliefs do not cause ME/CFS and MUS symptoms"
Quote:
The Wessely School approach to ME/CFS and MUS hypothesizes a causative role for unhelpful beliefs (H1), deconditioning (H2), and biased attention (H3).
The evidence related to these three hypotheses is reviewed in turn. Here I...
"Treatment harms to patients with ME/CFS"
Quote:
- Despite evidence of physiological and cellular abnormalities in myalgic encephalomyelitis (ME)/chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS), the dominant therapeutic approach has been cognitive behaviour therapy (CBT) and graded exercise therapy (GET)...
The Norwegian Institute of Public Health has published a report:
COVID-19-Epidemic: Covid-19: Long-Term Effects of COVID-19 - a rapid review
It has a summary in Norwegian, the rest is in English. Not able to read it, but noticed that one of the authors was Brurberg, who also was co author on...
I've never attended a PhD examination, so am not really sure. Here's how the University in Oslo describes the process and the opponents role:
Public defence
The disputation is the public defence of the thesis. It lasts between two to three hours, and is led by the chair of the defence.
The...
California Health Online - For Covid 'Long Haulers,' Battling for Disability Benefits Adds Aggravation to Exhaustion by David Tuller
Quote from the article:
Given the lack of testing in the first months, many “long haulers,” like Andersen, have no laboratory proof of infection. While antibody...
The Atlantic: Unlocking the Mysteries of Long COVID by Meghan O'Rourke
Quotes where ME is mentioned:
- The patients’ symptoms were too varied to be lumped under an established label; in some ways the condition resembled dysautonomia, and POTS in particular—but it was not textbook. (Some...
Yes it was a good episode with an all too familiar story. Alice Urbino was very eloquent with great reflections and analysis. She was just a teenager when she did LP and has been in therapy for help with untangling the internalised gaslighting it led to. Wonderful of her to tell her story and...
It's good of them to bring attention to this, but I wish they'd underlined that it is biomedical research that's needed the most when they write (my bold. text google translated):
Yes, a place where people could share their stories about undocumented treatments. How it has affected them as you say, the financial costs and also straight out harm for some.
I'm pretty sure the stories would soon exceed Recovery Norge's collection in number.
The Lancet: Long-haul COVID: heed the lessons from other infection-triggered illnesses by John N Aucott and Alison W Rebman
ETA: Both authors are from:
The Lyme Disease Research Center, Division of Rheumatology, Department of Medicine, Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, Baltimore
Maybe this should be on the Monbiot thread, but I believe dr. Pope's reply belongs here. Haven't seen that argument before, that "Covid-PVF" doesn't belong under the Long Covid umbrella.
Nature: US health agency will invest $1 billion to investigate 'long COVID'
The article doesn't mention ME, but underlines the importance of patient perspectives. It also links to the Nature editorial from last year urging to not repeat the mistakes that were done towards ME patients when it...
