2025: The 2019/24 Cochrane Larun review Exercise Therapy for CFS - including IAG, campaign, petition, comments and articles

Yes, although it is a shame I think that the journalist never contacted the people running the campaign and petition, although our arguments are summarised in the petition updates. The article makes no comment about the relabelling of a 2019 article as a 2024 one. And it notes that 14,000 people...

    The biopsychosocial model

Well, it's just a statement of the obvious really. Of course biological, psychological/behavioural and social factors will influence someone's likelihood of becoming ill and the severity of that illness. e.g. presence of a pathogen, willingness to see a doctor, availability of useful medicine...

Sex Differences in Long COVID, 2025, Shah et al.

In eTable 1, there are the results for the acute and crossover participants only. I think they are reported in the text too. These people were in the study with 30 days of their Covid-19 infection, so there is less room for self-selection when symptoms lingered. The risk ratio is a bit...

Protocol Serial Paediatrics Omics Tracking in [ME] (SPOT-ME): protocol paper for a multidisciplinary, observational study..., 2024, Armstrong+

I think it is worth giving some thought to the possible bias created in the omics sampling due to what I understand is the requirement for the participants to remain under the care of the hospital paediatricians/neuropsych people. Based on my experience, admittedly a while back, people who were...

Donating and fundraising by people with ME/CFS - discussion thread

Norway has good regional groups I think, united by the Norwegian MEA? I may be wrong, just the impression I had. Does the national group help the regional groups? What does the Norwegian MEA charge for membership fees? (Just thinking further on the 'no fees idea, if a charity didn't charge...

Sex Differences in Long COVID, 2025, Shah et al.

On the surface at least, they look to have accounted for things pretty well. But a lot of the information is in supplementary reports - there are annoying gaps in the report. The analysis around pregnancy is one. I don't think those sentences make sense. The risk appears to have been lower in...

Sex Differences in Long COVID, 2025, Shah et al.

(So potentially inherently lower risk of LC but higher risk of menopause symptoms that are labelled as LC?)

Sex Differences in Long COVID, 2025, Shah et al.

The participant characteristics are different for men and women e.g. 11% of the men are reported to have an immunocompromised condition, versus 4% of women. 30% of females were obese vs 21% of males. A staggering 40% of women reported a mental health disorder vs 26% of men. But they say that...

It's looking a bit more promising that I thought it might. They do seem to have stratified on symptoms.

Sex Differences in Long COVID, 2025, Shah et al.

They say that Long Covid risk is menopausal status dependent. But, 1.45 (non-menopause) versus 1.42 (menopause) in the 40-54 year female group (all relative to men)? That's basically the same. Maybe the hormones that change during menopause aren't affecting Long Covid onset risk. Female sex...

Request for Steering Group members to guide a study on online connections of people with ME/CFS and their offline lives

Thanks for the extra information Diane, and thanks for being here. Yes, I was having a similar thought. Your scope feels to me to be too broad to come up with anything other than very general and probably not that helpful results. I wonder if it is too late to narrow the scope? For example...

Behaviour Assessment System for Children, BASC - a discussion

But they have to get authority from somewhere Dave. A paediatrician with a white coat in a respected Childrens' Hospital can probably credibly diagnose a patient with psychopathy just by looking at them and their mother as they come in the door. A person with a diploma in child psychology in...

Protocol Serial Paediatrics Omics Tracking in [ME] (SPOT-ME): protocol paper for a multidisciplinary, observational study..., 2024, Armstrong+

Thanks for writing so powerfully @Utsikt. It's really hard for parents to understand. I had the benefit ( a costly benefit, but one nevertheless) of developing ME/CFS at exactly the same time as both my son and daughter. At the time we became sick, we were all mentally well and enjoying...

How is paediatric CFS/ME diagnosed and managed by paediatricians? An Australian Paediatric Research Network, 2014, Knight et al

the natural inclination of the doctors - 'I have pushed through adversity to be a high achiever, other people should too' reliance on tests: 'if none of my tests show that you have a physical problem, the problem must lie with your thoughts and behaviours' training in med school promoting the...

Behaviour Assessment System for Children, BASC - a discussion

The relevance of these questions to psychopathology are incredibly context dependent. We've already talked about the context of the child having a debilitating physical illness, and that will be especially true in the first few years when the child is experiencing the most dislocation to their...

How is paediatric CFS/ME diagnosed and managed by paediatricians? An Australian Paediatric Research Network, 2014, Knight et al

I doubt that the paediatricians even bother with a survey for clinical care, in much the same way as many of them don't seem to do much in the way of lab tests. I expect that their special experience and skills allow them to just divine that the young person in front of them has somatisation.

Yes, I have been a bit relentless. It is time I noted that it is impressive that Chris is still here, listening and replying. I am grateful. Ha. I think you mean there that the pet dogs are assumed to understand nothing. Of course, we know that pet dogs understand plenty. I find myself...

How is paediatric CFS/ME diagnosed and managed by paediatricians? An Australian Paediatric Research Network, 2014, Knight et al

Ha, that sentence is ambiguous, it could be the paediatricians with high rates of comorbid mental health conditions. I cannot work out how you would differentiate CFS/ME and CFS/ME +somatisation. I actually think that what many of the paediatricians are suggesting with their reference to...
