No knowledge of other viruses but there's something called "cryptogenic organizing pneumonia" (COP), which is an interstitial pneumonia with no known underlying viral or bacterial or fungal cause. "Organizing" means the lung tissue becomes fibrotic and "hardens".
Here, smokers are highly...
Yes I agree, PICS and ME would be easy to differenciate with clear criteria. But not all researchers are using them and tar everything fatigue related with the same "CFS" brush
That's why I'm worried how psychiatrists are already digging their claws into this.
I hope "our" researchers are faster.
From what I understand he's only refering to the confusing positive/negative PCR results afterwards, not necessarily immunity which needs antibody testing, I think.
Also, a positive PCR result later might not mean that the tested person has enough viral load to still be infectious.
But I don't...
Regarding reinfection/reactivation our main scientific advicer posted this study.
From what I understand his stance is that later PCR tests become less "reliable" and can switch from positive to negative and vice versa.
So if people have a positive result again after having been discharged...
There is this whole field of "post intensive care syndrome" (=PICS) that, on a very superficial level, might look a little like ME or rather CFS without PENE:
"Brain (cognitive) symptoms:
Decreased memory, thinking problems
Difficulty talking
Forgetfulness
Poor concentration
Trouble...
@ScottTriGuy "Motility issues" was the first thing that came to my mind, too, reading your symptoms.
So besides having a test for SIBO and H.Pylori a gastric emptying study might be another test to pursue. Depending on the test (breathing test, scintigraphy) it can be very exhausting and take...
Protecting yourself and others is a responsible thing to do. Using the N95 means you're less likely to end up in a hospital or exacerbate ME and later need more care.
When it comes to the aftermath of Covid there might be two things, I think:
One maybe specifically SarsCov2 related, possibly damage in lungs, heart or nervous system and maybe post viral fatigue or ME like symptoms. There isnt enough data here yet.
The other thing maybe post intensive care...
That doesn't look bad, especially with half of ICU beds still being empty.
It's also interesting that the percentage of people needing hospital admission and therefore from what I understand fall into the "severe or critically" ill category is around the same that has been reported from China...
Is DNR like a patient's will regarding end of life care?
What I find sad:
So many people with disablilities and chronic illnesses are being denied benefits/financial support/care etc. - because their condition isn't considered to be severe enough.
But in a triage situation it is?
Our...
Sorry I misread then - I thought this was referring to "forced" quarantine for milder cases that never even needed hospital care. To avoid further transmission in households.
Maybe, in our societies, covering our faces also goes completely against our idea of individuality. It's our face that makes us US.
Also, when we communicate we need to see each other's facial expressions and without that we might seem less trustworthy?
2 days ago for the first time I went...
They say Boris Johnson is getting standard oxygen, not invasive ventilation and he doesn't have pneumonia.
Does somebody know: Why do you need oxygen without pneumonia? Can an infected heart or weakend torso muscles make that necessary?
So far I've thought you'd be "safe" from the need of...
@Hip
I think they focus on close settings (home care, health care) with suspected or diagnosed cases because they want to make sure that medical masks as a (now) limited ressource are reserved for situations where transmission is most likely without one.
When it comes to spread in community...
The WHO's advice on masks from yesterday.
Suspected or mild cases should wear a medical mask that needs to be changed at least once daily
Same for caregivers or household members when in the same room with the infected person.
Possible downsides:
false sense of security
possible mask...
From what I understand "recovered" means 2 negative tests within 24hrs, see here. Edit: Page 3 shows different criteria by different institutions.
Maybe there's just not enough ressources anymore to follow up on patients and they focus on the ones that needed hospital care?
(Edit correction)
Hydroxychloroquine-COVID-19 study did not meet publishing society’s “expected standard”
"The paper that appears to have triggered the Trump administration’s obsession with hydroxychloroquine as a treatment for infection with the novel coronavirus has received a statement of concern from the...
The rationing of medical care also includes vaccines (when developed) and promising drugs.
Gilead has announced that they will give away their supply of Remdesivir for free for compassionate use and studies.
"Having a potential treatment in our hands comes with significant responsibility...
Other countries - I think at least China and S. Korea - also used electronic contact tracing.
Our CDC says we are at a R=1 at the moment, but we don't know which of the measures has had what effect.
We don't know for sure if making wearing masks mandatory would have any effect but from what...
