Association of adverse childhood experiences with the development of multiple sclerosis, 2022, Eid et al

Another too late meal - poor organisation skills! I remain entirely baffled --- EBV is strongly linked to MS (large study of US army personnel) and presumably if a sufficiently large population were available, who had post (EBV) viral onset, then pre-disposing genes could be identified. Why...

Is ME a metabolic problem or a signalling problem?

I'm grateful for the analysis provided above. From the outside (and having no knowledge) it seems to be very difficult to test the hypothesis - perhaps the GWAS (Chris Ponting) study will provide some supporting evidence and clues re how to test the hypothesis.

Association of adverse childhood experiences with the development of multiple sclerosis, 2022, Eid et al

I haven't read the abstract, or comments, and my blood sugar may be a bit low from a (too) long delayed meal but this statement is stunning: " Association of adverse childhood experiences with the development of multiple sclerosis, 2022, Eid et al" What idiot would write this/publish it, oh it...

A general thread on the PACE trial!

Forgotten the name of the (psychology) academic but he pointed out the mismatch between the support given to the (PACE) control group and the group who received the intervention (they had multiple times the number of interactions). So there really wasn't a control group.

USA: National Institutes of Health (NIH) intramural ME/CFS study

Haven't checked but the study fell short of the intended number of participants ---- Cort did an article some time ago (I think he was also a participant) and I think he dealt with the issue of those misdiagnosed/removed from the study --- where they replaced etc.

USA: National Institutes of Health (NIH) intramural ME/CFS study

Nailed it --- money! Yip these journals don't give a s--t about those desperate to see the outcome of this study. However, I think someone mentioned to me that they were coming under pressure to speed up the publication of some high profile Covid studies --- hopefully the same thing can happen...

USA: National Institutes of Health (NIH) intramural ME/CFS study

I've been told (but perhaps haven't fully understood) that traditional/established medical journals don't publish if there's been a pre-print - might have got that wrong though.

USA: National Institutes of Health (NIH) intramural ME/CFS study

As I think others have pointed out, apparently if Nath publishes a pre-print then the high profile medical journals will not publish the paper - i.e. if you want to publish in a major medical journal then no pre-print.

USA: National Institutes of Health (NIH) intramural ME/CFS study

Anyone know how long we may have to wait? I'm wondering if he's found that other diseases are misdiagnosed as ME/CFS? If he has made significant progress, and given that he's stated that "many cases of Long COVID strongly resemble ME/CFS"*, surely Nath deserves more funding from NIH & indeed...

Persistent fatigue induced by interferon-alpha: A novel, inflammation-based, proxy model of Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, 2018, Pariante et al

Noticed Japanese drug company Astellas gets a mention in your post. I picked up elsewhere that they are funding Dr. Systrom to test the drug Bocidelparis.

The '25% have severe ME' statistic

It's quoted in MEAction Factsheets e.g. https://www.meaction.net/wp-content/uploads/2018/10/MEAction-UK-Factsheet.pdf You could ask the moderators if they are aware of members (here) who are involved in MEAction UK and they may be able to advise. I recall this question coming up before - I'll...

    Magnesium

I happened to be looking up TPPP gene, i.e. since it turned up in a recent (small) GWAS study in ME/CFS*, and I noticed that magnesium got a mention: "Entrez Gene Summary for TPPP Gene Enables several functions, including GTPase activity; magnesium ion binding activity; and protein...

Health Sense article: Why deny patients with chronic fatigue syndrome treatments that can help?, 2022, by Peter White

I agree with Jonathan, i.e. this is such old ground it is hard to know what more to say. I also recall Jonathans advice i.e. that medicine is now evidence based, rather than theory driven. In the case of GET, & CBT, typically trials are unblinded and use subjective outcome criteria; these...

Health Sense article: Why deny patients with chronic fatigue syndrome treatments that can help?, 2022, by Peter White

Yes I'm told* that putting it on social media is a good idea - may force a response *Former colleague, who worked in the Minister's private office - my approach was/(largely) remains to write emails etc. However, their advice was to put it on social media - more public and thereby more likely...

    UK NICE 2021 ME/CFS Guideline, published 29th October - post-publication discussion

Wondering if this will give Cochranites bright ideas - launch on the stock market and make some money ---- you can see the dollar signs!

    Covid-19 vaccines and vaccinations

I seem to recall that, in the initial vaccine trial, a small number of people reported side effects --- when they unblinded the trial they found that there was a higher number in the placebo group (saline injection?) compared to the group which was vaccinated.

Graded Exercise Therapy for Patients with Chronic Fatigue Syndrome in Secondary care: a benchmarking study, 2021, Smakowski, Chalder et al

Where to start. "We think it is important to assess self-report outcomes in routine clinical practice within the UK National Health Service, where the routine use of objective measures is precluded due to cost" This statement at least acknowledges that you should objectively monitor the outcome...
