Post-Exertional Malaise - a discussion including defining and measuring PEM

Yes, but I couldn't stand for more than 2 minutes. I rested for 3 1/2 weeks and felt I had recovered and gone back to my baseline after one month so went out for a very nice 50 minute walk only to get up the next morning unable to stand up on my legs again. I had to crawl around and eat out...

Post-Exertional Malaise - a discussion including defining and measuring PEM

I contracted COVID in 2022 and it didn't resemble M.E PEM at all, not even close. No cognitive issues or other symptoms of delayed ME PEM. But, it was similar to PVFS over exertion I experienced during sudden viral onset in 1992. It affected legs muscles only, the only muscles I used for...

Viral RNA-Based Diagnostics: Nanopore System May Outperform PCR

The new diagnostic system combines Schmidt’s area of expertise in optofluidics, which is the control of tiny amounts of fluids with beams of light, with a nanopore for counting single nucleic acids to read genetic material. The tool was designed to test for Zika and SARS-CoV-2, which have been...

Preprint Plasma-based antigen persistence in the post-acute phase of SARS-CoV-2 infection, 2023, Peluso, Swank et al.

Although not without limitations, our data provide strong evidence that SARS-CoV-2, in some form or location, persists for up to 14 months following acute SARS-CoV-2 infection. This persistence is influenced by the events of acute infection. These findings motivate an urgent research agenda...

Post-Exertional Malaise - a discussion including defining and measuring PEM

Yes :emoji_hand_splayed: and these are the pwME who eventually reach the point of no return when they might have had a small chance of returning to work part-time or having a small social life early in the illness if they paced properly and didn't exercise. I continued to run for 2 yrs, but...

Screening Commercial Tea for Rapid Inactivation of Infectious SARS-CoV-2 in Saliva

Abstract SARS-CoV-2 infects the oral mucosa and is shed in salivary fluids. Traditionally, tea has been used by various cultures to treat respiratory ailments. The objective of this study was to identify commercially available teas that can rapidly inactivate infectious SARS-CoV-2 in saliva...

Animal study uncovers altered brain pH and lactate levels as a transdiagnostic endophenotype of neuropsychiatric disorders . . cognitive impairment

“This is the first and largest systematic study evaluating brain pH and lactate levels across a range of animal models for neuropsychiatric and neurodegenerative disorders. Our findings may lay the groundwork for new approaches to develop the transdiagnostic characterization of different...

Animal study uncovers altered brain pH and lactate levels as a transdiagnostic endophenotype of neuropsychiatric disorders . . cognitive impairment

Full Title: Large-scale animal model study uncovers altered brain pH and lactate levels as a transdiagnostic endophenotype of neuropsychiatric disorders involving cognitive impairment Abstract Increased levels of lactate, an end-product of glycolysis, have been proposed as a potential surrogate...

Effect of “needle sensation” and the real-time changes in autonomic nervous system activity during acupuncture analgesia, 2024, Zehua Liu et al

Introduction: Acupuncture analgesia (AA) is widely used in clinical practice. The autonomic nervous system (ANS) may be an important pathway for acupuncture signal transduction. However, real-time changes in autonomic function during AA and the effect of “needle sensation” remain unclear...

Review Attenuating Post-exertional Malaise in [ME/CFS] and Long-COVID: Is Blood Lactate Monitoring the Answer? 2024 Faghy et al

I am also interested in learning about lactate levels in the brain and how they negatively interplay with cognitive and physical activities.

Continuous Measurement of Lactate Concentration in Human Subjects through Direct Electron Transfer from Enzymes to Microneedle Electrodes,2023 Freeman

Abstract Microneedle lactate sensors may be used to continuously measure lactate concentration in the interstitial fluid in a minimally invasive and pain-free manner. First- and second-generation enzymatic sensors produce a redox-active product that is electrochemically sensed at the electrode...

In-ear integrated sensor array for the continuous monitoring of brain activity and of lactate in sweat, 2023, Yuchen Xu et al

Earbud biosensors provide continuous monitoring of brain activity and lactate levels “Being able to measure the dynamics of both brain cognitive activity and body metabolic state in one in-ear integrated device that doesn’t intrude on the comfort and mobility of the user opens up tremendous...

In-ear integrated sensor array for the continuous monitoring of brain activity and of lactate in sweat, 2023, Yuchen Xu et al

Abstract Owing to the proximity of the ear canal to the central nervous system, in-ear electrophysiological systems can be used to unobtrusively monitor brain states. Here, by taking advantage of the ear’s exocrine sweat glands, we describe an in-ear integrated array of electrochemical and...

Case report: Rapid-onset parkinsonism after a hornet sting, 2024, Svetlana Tomic et al

Neurological manifestations with basal ganglia involvement following Hymenoptera stings are rare and clinically ill-defined conditions. We present a patient with acute parkinsonism non-responsive to levodopa, who developed striatal lesions after a hornet sting. We report his response to...

Thread on Blood Lactate During Exercise

Turns out hearing that "BLa increases exponentially at high intensity" is a bit of a pet peeve of mine :) Hopefully this thread can help how we think about this If you chose 'exponential' were you thinking about a lactate test? Or were you thinking about it some other way?
