Do catatonia and ME/CFS have pathophysiological similarities?

Actually the situation is completely different. With a genetic study if you pick up a signal you can be pretty sure that it is linked to cause, even if through an indirect route, because genes must have come first. For metabolites it is highly likely that any finding is picking up downstream...

Do catatonia and ME/CFS have pathophysiological similarities?

So there's cheese and salt as well? Must be Italian!

Do catatonia and ME/CFS have pathophysiological similarities?

Yes but everything happening in the brain involves glutamate. It's a bit like saying the food must be Italian because it includes tomatoes.

Do catatonia and ME/CFS have pathophysiological similarities?

This does not sound at all like catatonia. It sounds more like cataplexy, which is something quite different.

Do catatonia and ME/CFS have pathophysiological similarities?

Catatonia is not in any way reminiscent of ME. Catatonia is usually associated with psychosis and immediately strikes one as strange and suggestive of major disturbance in brain function. It is not in any way like 'being too weak to move' nor 'not wanting to be moved' or anything remotely...

    NICE ME/CFS guideline - draft published for consultation - 10th November 2020

Yeah but if you look at the expert testimony you will see that all these studies were just hopelessly flawed in common sense terms and downgrading or upgrading or shaking it all about is all beside the point.

Paul Garner on Long Covid and ME/CFS - BMJ articles and other media.

Perhaps the most damning indictment of the BPS bigwigs is that they are happy to cheer on the most cringeworthy of alternative mind-body practitioners.

Gut dysbiosis in severe mental illness and chronic fatigue: a novel trans-diagnostic construct? A systematic review and meta-analysis, Safadi, 2021

It looks like another robotic word salad to me. That opening sentence looks nonsense and isn't even grammatical. Reduced gut-microbial diversity (“gut dysbiosis”) has been associated with an anhedonic/amotivational syndrome (“sickness behavior”) that manifests across severe mental disorders and...

    The NAD+ Long COVID Theory

I didn't say that it looked like an advertisement because it wasn't scientific paper. It just looks like an advertisement. Somebody wants to sell an idea for whatever reason. Quite a lot of scientific papers are advertisements too. With this sort of randomly jumbled connection of apparently...

Open GEM study - Prevalence of genetic diseases in ME/CFS patients, 2022, Esther Crawley, Bristol University

Mm..., I used to use pharmaceutical money to do other things I was more interested in...

    The NAD+ Long COVID Theory

And isn't this another advert? If we posted all the quack adverts with some link to Covid or ME we would drown in junk.

    The NAD+ Long COVID Theory

But is this really info, or just an advertisement? It is not as if it was a scientific paper.

Open GEM study - Prevalence of genetic diseases in ME/CFS patients, 2022, Esther Crawley, Bristol University

This looks very odd. Pompe disease is a genetic disorder that can present in young adults or teens with arm and leg weakness. As far as I know it does not produce symptoms like ME although a really inattentive physician might confuse weakness with fatigue. I guess the justification would be...

Off label use of Aripiprazole shows promise as a treatment for Myalgic Encephalomyelitis/Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (ME/CFS) Crosby et al. 2021

Yes, cherry-picking is mostly not deliberate. Cherries often pick themselves. The manky ones have already dropped off the tree. The underripe ones refuse to be picked. It's cherry picking.

    The NAD+ Long COVID Theory

This reads like a complete commercial pseudoscience set up. It is an advertisement is it not? Real science does not come remotely like this. Can you imagine Anthony Fauci presenting things like this? It might even be produced by a bot.

Brain glial activation in fibromyalgia – A multi-site positron emission tomography investigation (2018) Albrecht et al.

I would argue against using the term neuroinflammation. It is a buzz word with too little precision. The 2018 study suggested some microglial activation. That does not amount to inflammation. I am not ware of anything much being reported since but I don't search on fibromyalgia.

The biology of coronavirus COVID-19 - including research and treatments

The hyped press release does not sound very promising. There is no cytokine storm in Covid as far as I can gather.

    Psychological therapies. Discussion thread.

Not bad for a @Snowdrop I would say. Somewhat offish topic I have just bought and read Metazoa by Peter Godfrey-Smith in Sydney, which is all about the evolution of the mind. A very lovely book because it is all cast in terms of his passion for Scuba diving and sea creatures. Well worth...

    Psychological therapies. Discussion thread.

As I understand it we are mostly agreed that the situation in psychosis is not 'psychological' in the sense of 'biopsychosiocial'-type psychological. This is where the confusion comes in and I think Woolie is wanting to make the distinction too. By 'psychological component' in the BPS scheme is...
