I just heard the founder of 'Masks for All' on R4 explain this. It's because as breath leaves your mouth it's in the form of relatively large droplets and the mask can catch those. But without any restriction, those droplets get much smaller the further they get from your mouth (or the virus...
I just listened to this and found it incredibly frustrating because the emphasis seemed to be on, as @Jonathan Edwards said, the use of a mask to protect oneself rather than the use of a mask to protect others from oneself.
My understanding is that the home-made masks don't protect the wearer...
An 8-minute section that I've not had time to listen to, from 'More or Less' about whether we should wear masks:

Apologies for cross-posting (I just mentioned this on the 'spread' thread) but I just caught a guy on BBC Radio 4 saying that the exit strategy (?) in the UK would involve more wearing of masks. He was talking about the bluetooth contact-tracing idea, among other things. Didn't catch his name...

I've been talking to friends lately about how it would be good if everyone wore masks not for self-protection but to protect others but weirdly, they can't seem to hear it, even the health professionals - they still think in terms of self-protection and so think it would be a waste of time. That...
Seems like a pretty convincing argument for masks:

I received a similar email last week (but still have one future order left).
Have any Ocado Smartpass customers received the email allowing them to book a slot yet? I'm a bit scared it's going to stuff up...
Surely the govt shouldn't be leaving citizens to scramble around to get masks but should be instructing industry to mass-produce them - while prioritising frontline workers and patient for the top-quality ones that require the special fabric. And then the govt should surely be distributing the...
