the answer is political simply down to economics = the drive to lower everyones quality of life in order to boost profits and reduce government costs . so no mystery whatsoever .
Is that really true though, I mean government planning that favours cars above all else (and large scale subsidisation of roads and parking), or laws that allow automatic weapons to be owned by individuals isn't really about profit in general - just as much profit could be made by re-diverting resources.
But the people who control the organisations that profit from the status quo may not also be the ones that would profit from a different situation so they use their financial resources to exert influence on policy makers to prevent change.
