Summary: Common infections, including the chickenpox virus and herpes simplex virus type 1, can worsen cognitive performance and increase the risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease in middle-aged and older adults, a new study reports. The findings add to the growing body of evidence linking common infections to poor brain health associated with aging.

A new study from a team led by researchers at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health found that signs of common infections in a sample of middle-aged and older adults were associated with poorer performance on a test of global cognitive function.

Honestly, there are very strong parallels to medicine's OK-aying mass infections, dismissing all concerns about harm, and leaded gasoline spewing a neurotoxin in the atmosphere for decades.

Absurd that this is still essentially the end tail of medicine's refusal to accept the germ theory of disease. They only accepted some of it, and preferred to stick to the traditional fairy tales instead.

In hindsight it will probably look even worse, because it actually lasted far longer than leaded gasoline, although that's not entirely over. But it wasn't a for-profit industry that did this.
