The IOM report summarized this as saying the CBT/GET model of ME: "impaired progress and caused harm". Unfortunately, being aware and caring about the consequences of pushing a failed model of illness are very different things. The NIH did nothing meaningful as a result of being aware of massive systemic harm, essentially condoning it.
Although in this case it did massively impair scientific progress, essentially causing regression. But the real-life consequences of a model being wrong are almost never considered, and only ever by those suffering it.
