Health officials noted that “for every one case of paralytic polio observed, there may be hundreds of other people infected." https://www.politico.com/news/2022/09/09/new-york-declares-polio-state-of-emergency-00055925
TWIV has had some great podcasts about this subject. Vincent Rancaniello Phd has done research with polio. https://www.microbe.tv/twiv/twiv-931/ It's about oral polio vaccination in other parts of the world. Oral polio vaccine causes some cases of polio in other countries and that's what we're seeing in the US at present (via people from other parts of the world who received the oral polio vaccine or OPV and travel to the US). In the US and the more developed world, we switched to IPV, an injectable vaccine. This method prevents polio being shed in feces. It's clear that immunization in the US has dropped off during the pandemic. The message is that if you're not sure you've received your three doses of IPV as a kid, you need to get immunized. All schools required it after a certain date so that is one way to tell if you've been immunized (this applies to the US).
