Abstract: The coronavirus pandemic was declared to be over by the WHO in 2023. However, the consequences of this pandemic are still present. Some of those infected with SARS-CoV-2 complain of persistent health impairments and have developed post-COVID syndrome (PCS) as defined by the WHO. Many of these patients describe fatigue with exercise intolerance as the main symptom. Parallels to the symptoms of myalgic encephalomyelitis/chronic fatigue syndrome (ME/CFS) are obvious. This article is a summary of the studies published in 2022 and 2023 on the first patients presenting to the Charité Fatigue Centre with persistent symptoms 6 months after COVID-19. Almost half of the patients presented with a full picture of ME/CFS and continued to be severely ill over the course of the disease. The findings give us the opportunity to better understand the clinical picture and its pathomechanisms and enable us to develop targeted therapeutic approaches as part of clinical trials.
