From @Tapanui 'Flu's excellent blog: "The University of Otago’s Medical School had undertaken a survey, and concluded that “…the clinical picture in the majority of the 70 patients studied is entirely consistent with the diagnosis of myalgic encephalomyelitis.” One of the findings of the survey was that “All thought the periods of unwellness were related to activity or exertion, and that improvement was usually brought about by rest.” So they all had post-exertional symptom exacerbation (PESE), also known as post-exertional malaise (PEM), in keeping with more recent definitions of M.E." So interesting to see this documented evidence of PEM from the 1980s.
New blog post For any NZ ME history buffs: One of the references mentioned (not for the main paper under discussion but a later one) is "Snow, P. G. (2002). Reminiscences of the chronic fatigue syndrome. New Zealand Family Physician, 29(6), 385–386". The full text can be freely downloaded from the journal archives. Look for December 2002. That edition also contains several other articles on CFS as well (which I haven't read yet). Annoyingly Snow's piece is published below a banner reading "functional somatic syndromes" https://www.rnzcgp.org.nz/RNZCGP/Pu...Physician_/New_Zealand_Family_Physician.aspx?
