About this event
ME/CFS Drop-in session

  • Do you or some-one you care for have a diagnosis of ME/CFS?
  • Do you have an interest in this condition?
  • Our drop in is an opportunity to meet others with ME/CFS and speak to specialists about ME/CFS.
Come and join us at the Recovery College@Deepdale site, next to the Minerva Health Centre on 8th June 13.00 to 15.00.

ME/CFS, Myalgic Encephalomyelitis (ME), Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS) is aneurological condition which affects a patient both physically and cognitively. The main feature is persistent physical and mental fatigue, which differs from normal tiredness.

This condition is considered under the Equality Act 2010. It has also been classified as a long term neurological condition. ME/CFS affects people in different ways and no two people experience the illness in the same way. It is not adequately relieved by rest and is usually out of proportion to the activity undertaken.

Lancashire Recovery College provides a learning service that works alongside experts by experience and professionals by experience, to co-produce courses that enhance wellbeing and social opportunities in your community.

This co-produced course has been developed and will be delivered alongside people who truly understand and can share their lived experience. We believe this approach captures the true values of recovery Hope, Opportunity and Control.

My first suspicion was that this uses extracts from a longer hopefully clearer piece selected by someone who did not quite understand what they were reading.

From their website:

“Our courses are co-designed, alongside people with lived experience and professionals by experience, to help you find accessible and fun health and wellbeing opportunities important to you.”

The headings include Covid 19 Resources, Dealing with Addiction, Support with Bereavement and Loss, The Phoenix Art and Health Project and HARRI Health Advice Recovery Resilience Information.

Note, “HARRI is our health and wellbeing engagement vehicle, with it we are able to travel across Lancashire and South Cumbria to talk with the local communities and individuals. … … … Onboard there will be a mixed group from within the NHS and beyond, which will enable us to offer you a wide range of information on many of the issues you may be facing, such as job advice, quit smoking, diabetic DESMOND, Steady On, Myplace, Lancashire Victim support and much more.“

I assume this is distinct from the IAPT services in the same area [see
Talking therapy services (also known as Improving Access to Psychological Therapies - IAPT)
https://www.healthierlsc.co.uk/MentalHealthSupport-1/Talking-therapy-services ]. My recollection is that this area is influenced by the potentially dangerous belief that MUS is a positive psychiatric diagnosis that can be treated by talk and lifestyle changes, so though it sounds potentially helpful for people with ME/CFS who feel they have support needs, so much will depend on appropriate diagnosis and the attitudes/understanding of the people involved.
