"Sometimes when I'm in a crash (either due to overexertion, or to a different, unidentified factor), I experience an unpleasant taste in my mouth. This makes water taste rather unpleasant. It's weird. Does anyone else get this?"

I don't know if you get bloating or burping, but I associate the bad taste with acid reflux from your stomach ( due to lying down).

My sense of taste often changes when I start to crash.

I wouldn't describe it as a taste in itself, it's just that almost everything I eat and drink doesn't taste 'right' (and generally tastes 'orrible).

I sometimes smell burning when there isn’t anything burning when I’m feeling bad.

Daughter has commented re metallic taste / edge.

Could it be hormonal signalling ? ( taste changes too at puberty and pregnancy)

I don't know whether mine is metallic.

I don't know why people describe tastes as metallic. I don't eat metal and I don't think anyone else does either. (This might be my autism literal thinking at work?)

My sense of smell, not taste has been altered with ME. Lots of things used to smell metallic - even flowers.

I do smell burning or other odds smells when there seems to be nothing that could cause that smell.

Can't recall if my sense of taste has been altered. I don't think so.

I just asked my wife if she ever got a strange taste in her mouth and she said "Oh yes, I get that whenever I'm completely out of energy, along with the indigestion and feeling sick". I knew of all the other stuff but the taste I was unaware of. But my wife didn't have to think about it for a moment.

yes weird taste & phantom smells...

smells - things smell like cat faeces or cat urine, or cigarette smoke.

    taste - yes metallic
It is literal for me, it tastes like if you use cutlery that is steel but silver plated & they're old, the silver plate starts to wear off & the unpolished steel has a taste.
Blood does taste metallic , I usually check my gums when it happens because it will taste the same if your gums are bleeding, but they never are it's just the taste.

I get it too. The mouth feels very dry with it. I up the water intake in case it is also drying me out elsewhere in the body. It does feel that it could be affecting tissue everywhere (?).

For me it is like the nasty taste that you get in your mouth when you're ill with a virus.

From healthline.com: "When you have a cold, sinus infection, or other illness, your body naturally releases a protein made by different cells in the body to promote and mediate inflammation. It’s thought that this protein can also affect the taste buds, causing increased sensitivity to bitter tastes when you’re sick."

Another website says that this protein is called TNF. (https://www.bustle.com/p/why-does-w...k-ruby-rose-asked-we-found-the-answer-9094818)

This wouldn't surprise me at all - I suspecy that inflammation is involved for me because anti inflammatories make me feel better.

    Have you also checked meds?

I got a strange taste from sleeping meds (it was either Zopiclone or Zolpidem, I dont remeber which one).

I took them when I crashed and thought the taste was a crash symptom until I realized it was due to the med.

The taste was bitter and metallic and just overall disgusting

    The plot thickens...

I've realised that, for the last 10 days, I've had this bad taste thing literally every second day, without fail. And I'm fine on the days inbetween. It's very bizarre.

It's not even a crash thing now. I'm not crashed. I'm stable. The bad taste does seem to correlate with small worsenings in energy levels, but it's not PEM. And up until recently, I didn't tend to get a bad taste accompanying low energy levels. This is so bizarre honestly wtf. Why is my body so weird.

A bad taste is minor in the scheme of things, but it's very pervasive and it's difficult to motivate myself to drink enough water when water tastes horrid.

This is literally what the past week has been like:

    Thursday: bad taste, lower energy
    Friday: my normal
    Saturday: bad taste, lower energy
    Sunday: my normal
    Monday: bad taste, lower energy
    Yesterday: my normal
    Today: bad taste, lower energy

    WTF
