The complexities of Long Covid—that it requires multiple specialists for successful treatment, that it affects people around the world and, often, far from needed medical care, that it is difficult to diagnose—require a systems approach. SILC seeks to address these challenges through three areas of work: webinar-based medical training, virtual collaboration for patient care, and large-scale, AI and machine-learning driven research. International focus, which is good. https://silc.org/partners/
For those like me who didn't know this is run by a philantropic organisation founded by Eric (former CEO of Google) and Wendy Schmidt whose foundation holds over $1 billion in philanthropic assets. Apart from fancy buzzwords its however unclear to me what their goals for LC are.
I'm sure you already saw that Eric's daughter reportedly (as of 11/15/21) is a Long COVID patient. So my bet would be that this isn't a vanity project, especially when decade-long tenured leaders from HHS & CDC left their government positions in the industry to join. Time will tell though impact of course. "Schmidt, who is on leave, declined to be interviewed over the phone for this story. The Journal reported last year that she was suffering from aftereffects of coronavirus" https://archive.ph/8dMdx#selection-3223.0-3227.67
CTV News: ‘Long COVID has really mystified’: Western University researchers take steps to unravel long COVID mysteries” “The Schmidt’s have been supporters of the Western University long COVID research from its early days”
This is still the most likely way this gets solved. The rare combination of having the money and the connections to spend them wisely, combined with the motivation to do something about it. The institutions of medicine have proven to be immensely disappointing in every aspect so far. They can't even pull off getting started going on 5 years. It's pathetic. This one. Or another. Our lives are pretty much in the hands of chance lining up with aristocratic largesses, same as it used to be. IMO every billionaire is a policy failure, but there's just nothing else going on. Humanity never changes.
Agree. Now we got Khosla Ventures and Google (and partially Steven A Cohen*). It’s a start. * funding some more dubious stuff https://www.s4me.info/threads/core-...conditions-clinic-at-mt-sinai-hospital.40605/
I assume they are based in the San Francisco Area? I wonder if we could get David Tuller or maybe the Dafoe/Davis family in touch with them? Because it seems like none of them really know anything about ME. Here’s their current staff: * https://silc.org/about-us/ It looks like none of them are specialised in anything post viral. They have a bunch of people who worked on COVID specifically and one who worked on Ebola and another on AIDS.
Why read the existing literature when you can re-invent your own wheel!! Everybody with their own wheel!
Sharing from their site if helpful: "If you have any questions about these Terms, please email us at info@silc.org. You also may write to: 555 Bryant St., #374, Palo Alto, CA 94301, Attn: Schmidt Initiative for Long COVID."
I don’t have the energy for that but if anyone has the motivation I think that it would be a worthwhile effort.
