This was an on/off symptom for more than a year. I feel my right ankle more and more causing grief to me. I actually feel so uncomfortable recently. It is now, including mornings, permanently sore and swollen. It feels as if something is stuck inside. I used Vicks vaporub at some point and it relieved it a bit. Any ideas?
@erin You should definitely get that checked out if you haven't done so already. As Cheesus said it could be edema, but you also want to make sure that it isn't a blood clot.
I have seen an orthopedist in early September. I had flank pain (left), had lots of blood tests to eradicate certain diseases. All the results were normal. He said flank pain was due to inflammation of the soft tissue. He checked the ankle and it was swollen that day, he didn't say much about it. Prescribed corticosteroid injection. Both pain gone after the injection but the ankle pain gradually came back. Forgot to mention heat helps a bit too, ice is a definite no... I might go back to him on Monday. He's at the local hospital everyday.
@erin Which movement hurts most - foot up and down, foot side to side or just standing? I am not supposed to practice rheumatology here but I can make general comments!
Jonathan, side to side definitely hurts. Not too much though. It also makes a clicking sound when I flex my ankle. Its the right outside of the right ankle is swollen. In general I feel that ankle is heavy and there is a very slight constant dull pain there. Thank you.
It might be worth asking a rheumatologist. One possibility is a tenosynovitis of one of the peroneal muscles that runs round the outside.
Update, to be able to have an appointment with arheumatologist I have to go to my local hospital to orthopedist doctor. I went to see him. He did blood test for rheumatism and the results were negative. He also run some other tests for potassium, calcium and magnesium. Magnesium result will be next week. Other were in normal, calcium was a bit near border so he prescribed me a calcium supplement. I got it and read the directions it is full of lactose! I can't tolerate lactose recently. So I'm dissappointed. He also gave me a muscle relaxant, I told him that I won't be using as it'll hurt my stomach. He gave me some Rennie with it! I still won't use it. Lastly, he prescribed some variscus vein medicine, looks harmless. Shoul I take this one? I don't know what to do!
@erin, have you taken a fluoroquinolone antibiotic in the last few months? They can cause immediate or delayed pain and tears to tendons, muscles, cartilage etc, especially if an area was already injured or weakened.
@Gingergrrl, I had the fluoroquinolone antibiotic in last May. I caused my gastritis and now I can't tolerate both gluten and dairy. I'm not sure the tolerances caused by this horrid antibiotic. It's 6months ago, do you think it can still cause this? Oh, I forgot to mention that the dr took an X-ray of the ankle and he said everything looked normal. Don't know whether to take varicus vein med or not.
According to the research, FQ antibiotic injuries can appear many months after finishing the antibiotic which makes them so difficult to diagnose b/c people often do not make the connection. I have NO idea if this is the cause of your injury, only that the time delay is common. In my experience, unless you have an actual tendon rupture, FQ injuries do not know up on an x-ray. My injury was to my right triceps tendon in 2010 from Levaquin.
Thanks Gingergrrl. I suffered so much while I was on Avelox, terrible sudden weird depression like symptom went away as soon as I stopped the medication. But the nausea had stayed and I've lost a stone since May.
