Long COVID in the United States, 2023, David G. Blanchflower and Alex Bryson

Hardly surprising that they don't get the nuances of medical terms. Blanchflower is an economist and Bryson is Professor of Quantitive Social Science with a PhD in Sociology and a research focus on 'labour economics and employment relations' https://www.niesr.ac.uk/people/bryson So basically...

Return-to-work with long COVID: An Episodic Disability and Total Worker Health® analysis, 2023, Stelson et al.

There are so many occupations where these sorts of accommodations are simply not feasible. Manual labour, factory work, teachers, nurses and other clinicians, carers, and so many more. And even for office workers there are problems with sustaining concentration, meetings, basically anything that...

Trial Report Successful treatment of myalgic encephalomyelitis/chronic fatigue syndrome using hydrogen gas: four case reports, 2023, Hirano

There isn't an abstract, but I think this paragraph serves the purpose: Molecular hydrogen (H2) is a gaseous molecule that selectively scavenges reactive oxygen and nitrogen species with strong oxidizing power, namely, hydroxyl radicals (·OH) and peroxynitrite, respectively.[11,12] H2 easily...

Trial Report Repetitive Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation Ameliorates Symptoms in Patients with Myalgic Encephalomyelitis (Chronic Fatigue Syndrome), 2023, Miwa

Have I got this right? The patients had 10 treatments over 2 weeks during which time they stayed in hospital. The tests were done before and at the end of the 2 weeks. So surely any improvements could be a result of resting in hospital for 2 weeks.

Independent advisory group for the full update of the Cochrane review on exercise therapy and ME/CFS (2020), led by Hilda Bastian

Hi @sonya, welcome to the forum. Yes, we're aware that Peter Gladwell is part of BACME as well as being on the IAG, so presumably has been able to tell them that the process has re-started. I just wish the IAG itself, in other words Hilda or someone else deputising for her, had continued...

Independent advisory group for the full update of the Cochrane review on exercise therapy and ME/CFS (2020), led by Hilda Bastian

The Scandinavian move is a move of the Norwegian office from one place to another within Norway. I don't think that's directly linked to the UK central office closing, but I could be wrong.

Independent advisory group for the full update of the Cochrane review on exercise therapy and ME/CFS (2020), led by Hilda Bastian

I had forgotten it was stated that organisations were appointed to hold positions. I wonder how deep into their membership involvement was expected to reach, and how you can appoint a membership organisation and then ask its nominated representative(s) to sign non disclosure agreements. Are they...

Independent advisory group for the full update of the Cochrane review on exercise therapy and ME/CFS (2020), led by Hilda Bastian

I don't see an overlap with the NICE guidelines group. Who were you thinking of, @Peter Trewhitt?

Independent advisory group for the full update of the Cochrane review on exercise therapy and ME/CFS (2020), led by Hilda Bastian

So Karla Soares-Weiser, the editor in chief, and Hilda put their heads together about the IAG in July 2021 after 9 had been appointed, and decided someone who had recovered from ME/CFS should be added to the IAG, with no logic provided on why they thought that was necessary. My suspicious mind...

Cochrane published the list of review authors and IAG members back in May 2021 along with short biographies of each. https://community.cochrane.org/organizational-info/people/central-executive-team/evidence-production-methods-directorate/stakeholder-engagement-high-profile-reviews-pilot-1...

Guardian — Health anxiety can be all-consuming. Accepting uncertainty is an important step

I wouldn't have a problem with the article if doctors and psychologists were capable of distinguishing genuine health anxiety, which I assume does exist for some people, and genuine physical illness that can currently only be diagnosed by the pattern of symptoms like ME/CFS. While we are still...

One would think so. Let's hope I'm wrong and it really is some significant scientific progress.

Responsible ME/CFS journalism - how to report on treatments?

I question the suggestion that mind body practices are not thought of as harmful. When I was healthy meditation, mindfulness etc was pleasant and relaxing and probably did me a bit of good. Now they make things worse by focusing me on pain etc and leaving me more tense. And positive affirmations...

The science of craniocervical instability and other spinal issues and their possible connection with ME/CFS - discussion thread

I agree all those things should be done, @LarsSG, but I'd rather they were done by a scientist/clinician with access to all the data and patients. Better still of course, they should only be doing them as part of a clinical trial.

Responsible ME/CFS journalism - how to report on treatments?

To take the converse argument, by including n=1 cases in series of articles that purport to be about scientific developments in ME/CFS, there is the real danger of encouraging people to try things that are useless, expensive and have the potential to cause harm. Writing enthusiastic articles...

The science of craniocervical instability and other spinal issues and their possible connection with ME/CFS - discussion thread

I agree it's irresponsible to write about it with so few caveats and no evidence to support any of it. They now even seem to be saying POTS is an indication of CCI, which will confuse a lot of people with ME/CFS who also have POTS that is nothing at all to do with CCI. There are some odd...

Complement dysregulation is a predictive and therapeutically amenable feature of long COVID, 2023, Morgan et al

Although the p values are strong, it looks from most of the dot plots like the majority of the long covid patients are in the same range of values for each test as the controls. So not a test that can diagnose Long Covid. It looks like there is a subgroup with significantly different results. I...

New Long Covid non-profit 501(c)(3) org registered: Long COVID Foundation (LCF)

It looks to me like a small group of friends supporting an individual who has decided to make a documentary. I assume the main reason for setting up as a foundation is so they can publicise and fundraise for the film. They have already fixed on their belief about the cause of LC. That this...
