    ME/CFS vs atypical depression

I used to suffer from something like this. The cause was having the wrong balance of fun vs. work/stressful stuff in my life. Keep in mind that that balance looks very different because I'm autistic. I wasn't sad all the time, I just couldn't cope with my workload. I was dramatically functional...

I've been pretty tired at times, but my tongue has never hung down to the floor like that.

What PEM is like at relatively high physical function

I can't do tasks because you simply don't have the energy. I try to start things, but tell myself I will rest a few minutes first, and then hours pass. (Often, time seems to pass quickly.) You have the motivation and drive for things but just can't start them or stay on track. However, you don't...

Brian Walitt and his role leading ME/CFS research at the USA NIH

Agreed. This paper is mediocre, but it's in the realm of biomedical, not biopsychosocial, research. Let's use it as a starting-off point. "We appreciate the attention you paid to ME/CFS but this isn't enough to lead to treatments that really help us. We'd like further work, like higher funding...

Trial Report Identifying the mental health burden in ME/CFS patients in Switzerland: A pilot study, 2024, König et al

This is a very important study. It shows that telling people with ME/CFS that their illness is psychosomatic makes them suicidal.

Closed UK: DecodeME updates, was recruitment thread.

If DecodeME provides good results, I wonder if there would be any benefit to an even larger GWAS in the United States or the US plus several more countries. We have a larger population to pull from. Also, I wonder if it would help that we're more racially diverse. There might be genes that are...

Deep phenotyping of post-infectious myalgic encephalomyelitis/chronic fatigue syndrome, 2024, Walitt et al

After taking some time to read the study, I can conclude there are good parts and bad parts. The NIH was quite thorough and delivered additional evidence that ME/CFS is biological. Many of their findings point to the immune system, others point to the nervous system. On the balance, this study...

The nanoneedle salt stress test – too good a clue to leave abandoned on the lab bench?

I think this is good news. I was very annoyed when I heard that nanoneedle wasn't going anywhere because of funding. Now let's see if this is for real.

New German Trial for Rituximab? (High Dose)

That's ridiculous. PwME should be allowed to decide what treatments they want. If it works but renders people infertile I would take it. I don't care because I never want children.

In vitro B cell experiments explore the role of CD24, CD38 and energy metabolism in ME/CFS, 2023, Armstrong et al

I've never thought a defect in energy production was the main cause of ME/CFS. I think energy production is impaired because the cells are shifting into a "defensive" state for some reason. Perhaps immune signals.

Advice on mask-wearing to protect against Covid-19

That's also completely and utterly false, it's misinformation pushed by the CDC in the early stages of the pandemic. Let's first look at a few terms: Source control: Preventing an infected person from spreading to others. Infection control: Preventing the wearer from getting infected. Good...

Advice on mask-wearing to protect against Covid-19

I hastily found this paper which discusses how particulate filters work: An overview of filtration efficiency through the masks: Mechanisms of the aerosols penetration. They're not like screens that only catch particles smaller than the screen. They trap larger particles by screening them, but...
