    Ketogenic diet

@sb4 If you are hoping to lose a few kg, then you don’t need to push up the fat angle once you are fat adapted - the reasoning being that your body will then turn to your own fat stores to find the calories required. Once you no longer need to lose, then you might want to up the fat again to...

I understand it is important to keep salt levels up. If you aren’t getting it with food, then a little in water can help - in my experience.

Long term diet change in my view. I have heard people say a fast of several days can reset something long term, but that it not my experience. Fasting intermittently has helped me but the effects are not sustained long term in my experience

And this is where we just don’t know enough about ME, or even individual differences in healthies. But I agree- if it’s not working change things.

I think different people have different adjustment times. I was already eating low sugar, and fasting a bit so was perhaps more fat adapted. It got easier as time went on. I took extra salt, some LowSalt which has Potassium Chloride as well as Sodium Chloride to stave off headaches. I also eased...

Poll: Do your symptoms improve when you fast for 1-2 days?

Like you @Forbin I lost a load of weight (28lbs) in the first months after ME onset. I just felt nauseous a lot of the time, and had no appetite. As ME became established so my appetite returned and I gradually regained some of those pounds. However when I took the ARV drug in 2016 I...

Quite possible. I had most of those symptoms except diarrhoea prior to going gluten free. I think mental clarity has improved again since starting fasting/keto but that’s hard to measure.

Poll: Do your symptoms improve when you fast for 1-2 days?

I regularly do 20 hour fasts and in the past have done twice weekly 36 hour fasts for weeks on end. I also tried a few longer fasts. Since starting keto style eating in April I haven’t done fasts above 20 hours. I find if I want to do any activity, I do much better not eating until after the...

Mind you @Trish the two analogies could perhaps work well together? It could be that as our batteries run down, so we have less energy to efficiently empty the toxin barrel, meaning it fills even faster. Hence the moment of a crash becomes even harder to predict. :(

    Ketogenic diet

I liked it for a while - but lately I feel it too readily feeds into the “tired” notion, of a crash just being tiredness. People often say a crash feels like being poisoned - so I now prefer the barrel of toxins analogy - along with their spilling out representing that horrid cascade of...

    Ketogenic diet

I have found my tolerance to doing stuff has changed. I think I am now less susceptible to having a crash after a single higher energy event than I was before - meaning I can take a few more in-the-moment risks than previously. However, I cannot that sustain effort over a series of days. A...

    Ketogenic diet

Of course this is a dilemma with everything you try whilst suffering from a long term fluctuating condition, and it is the very reason we need randomised, placebo controlled, blinded, trials. I had a bit of fun writing a short blog on this idea a while back. (Having said that I don’t think...

    Ketogenic diet

Fasting helped me last year. I tried various fast durations, and during them only drank water, coffee (with splash of milk) and electrolytes. In the end I did 2 x 36hr fasts most weeks! But when I started keto, I paused the longer fasts. I still don’t usually eat before midday, nor after 8pm...
