Brexit is happening: what does it mean for science?

Pardon me Jonathan but the gist I picked up in many discussions here was that as far as funding for ME/CFS was concerned (particularly with respect to the MRC) was that the funding would be there if there was any promising line of research to pursue.

Brexit is happening: what does it mean for science?

Maybe so but my point was that those other meanies (biomedical researchers) appear to have lots of money.

Brexit is happening: what does it mean for science?

Interesting. This article suggests that there is a glut of available funding for biomedical research in the UK leading to concerns that it is crowding out research in other areas and isn't being spent productively ...

Abnormalities in the urine of people with ME/CFS? A clinician asks for feedback

My urine tends to smell of things I've eaten in my last meal - something I don't remember from pre ME/CFS.

MEAction: "DEMYSTIFYING THE DIAGNOSTIC CRITERIA FOR ME AND RELATED DISEASE"

Any reliable evidence for the delayed bit Jonathan? I can PEM pretty much immediately after or during various stressors.

Seems like a reasonable idea although I doubt there's anything unique to find.

Article: Brain studies show chronic fatigue syndrome and Gulf War illness are distinct conditions

Or whatever combination of conditions gulf war vets encountered include those likely to trigger or unmask an ME-like chronic condition.

    Chilled worms live longer

Scientists combining studies in humans, mice and nematode worms suggest that levels of neural excitation modulate longevity in all species and also connects with insulin metabolism. Regulation of lifespan by neural excitation and REST https://www.nature.com/articles/s41586-019-1647-8 Related...

To pay attention - The brain uses filters not a spotlight.

It always seemed intuitively obvious to me but the details as to how it works matter. Some emphasise top down attentional processes (amenable to manipulation of course through cognitive 'therapies') whereas this model suggests a key role for prior pre-conscious processes.

To pay attention - The brain uses filters not a spotlight.

An interesting light read article : https://www.quantamagazine.org/to-pay-attention-the-brain-uses-filters-not-a-spotlight-20190924/ Anyone find their attention prone to wandering?

Graded activity is an important component in CBT to reduce severe fatigue: cancer survivors (Knoop et al., 2019)

If so, are PWME pre-disposed? https://www.s4me.info/threads/mglur5-mediates-post-radiotherapy-fatigue-development-in-cancer-patients-2018-saligan-et-al.11261/

A study I want someone to do

At least one study suggests PWME do much worse on tasks involving multi-tasking - perhaps that's the issue?

mGluR5 mediates post-radiotherapy fatigue development in cancer patients (2018) Saligan et al.

Possibly. I'm relating it to this : https://www.s4me.info/threads/a-study-i-want-someone-to-do.11143/page-2#post-199831

mGluR5 mediates post-radiotherapy fatigue development in cancer patients https://www.nature.com/articles/s41398-018-0161-3 In essence, a genetic vulnerability primes the immune system to an inflammatory reponse to radiotherapy in those who develop long term fatigue. Interestingly these...

A study I want someone to do

Some might find these 'old school' techniques being proposed to avoid placebo effects in clinical trials for the treatment of fragile X syndrome (genetic ASD) interesting (I do!) : https://www.the-scientist.com/magazine-issue/recent-trials-for-fragile-x-syndrome-offer-hope-66305

A study I want someone to do

How about, rather than prolonged retention of something, we have a situation of impaired filtering leading ultimately to an information processing blockage? As an example (grossly simplified), suppose that transport (specifically reuptake) of glutamatergic neurotransmission is impaired. In...

A study I want someone to do

Yes there might. The challenge being to operationalise those experiences into an experimental design which will be to a greater or lesser extent an abstraction. One example which I'm sure you're familiar with is metacontrast masking which might show up some differences in temporal image...

A study I want someone to do

Yes thanks Jonathan. I suspect thought an experiment like this would appear to be such an abtraction that it wouldn't be immediately apparent to PWME that it's relevant to their daily experience. Not a reason not to do it though. These can be pretty simple experiments to set up (using a PC...

A study I want someone to do

Why don't we (the forum) put together an outline protocol for what such an experiment would look like. Perhaps someone might be interested in running it?
