    News from Australia

Apologies if this has already been posted! Tracie White was interviewed on Nightlife (ABC radio) about her book, The Puzzle Solver. https://www.abc.net.au/radio/programs/nightlife/the-writers-the-puzzle-solver-by-tracie-white/13175640

Paul Garner on Long Covid and ME/CFS - BMJ articles and other media.

Looks like Garner is on the Central Sensitisation bandwagon. I guess he must that it’s a bit of a sturdier bandwagon to be on than the deconditioning bandwagon, which has the wheels falling off. PS The graphic is from Australia’s outdated 2002 clinical guidelines for CFS. No doubt Australia’s...

    News from Australia

Wow, what an amazing summary, @RoseE! I’m still PEM’d from Friday, and didn’t listen beyond Heidi, but I heard about Karen Price’s mind-body duality piece. I can’t bear to go back and listen, but it kept me awake last night, so I ended up writing a Twitter thread to address it to help me let it...

Dr Norman Swan: ME/CFS is more psychosomatic than long-COVID

This was good too, from the Associate Editor of Guardian Australia, in response to Swan’s comments.

Dr Norman Swan: ME/CFS is more psychosomatic than long-COVID

I agree. If we were measuring success here by whether or not Swan changed his mind, then you would have to say that there was no progress. But that was never the outcome for me. What we needed was for the audience to hear that, contrary to what he said on Friday, the condition isn’t...

Dr Norman Swan: ME/CFS is more psychosomatic than long-COVID

Yeah, it was really significant that Tegan said that Norman’s comments “fly in the face” of WHO, CDC, NHMRC. It shows that the medical establishment has moved, and people like Swan are being forced to catch up. For once, we had the medical establishment in our corner. It’s solid progress from...

Dr Norman Swan: ME/CFS is more psychosomatic than long-COVID

Today’s podcast is up and we got the best outcome we could have hoped for... an on-air correction! It’s not perfect but, given this is Norman Swan we’re talking about, this is a really good shift. It starts at 7.30...

Dr Norman Swan: ME/CFS is more psychosomatic than long-COVID

I suggested to Tegan that they speak with Emerge, to get accurate info, but we’ve not had any contact, and I doubt Swan would do that. We’re all holding our collective breaths.

Dr Norman Swan: ME/CFS is more psychosomatic than long-COVID

On today’s episode of the podcast, Tegan (Norman Swan’s cohost) said this: “So Norman, on Friday's Coronacast we mentioned chronic fatigue syndrome in passing, and we've had a lot of response from our audience about it. We don't have time to do it justice today but we will pick it up tomorrow...

Dr Norman Swan: ME/CFS is more psychosomatic than long-COVID

Yes, it’s very frustrating but not all that surprising. Swan has been pro-PACE/GET for years. He is mates with Hickie, which I’m sure plays a huge role in this blind spot. It’s a shame he’s been so unwilling to bring the same scientific rigour to ME/CFS that he’s brought to COVID-19. No, Heidi...

Dr Norman Swan: ME/CFS is more psychosomatic than long-COVID

I’ve written a short Twitter thread addressing the inaccuracies in Swan’s comments. Please like, reply and retweet! I’ve also lodged a complaint with the ABC over the factual errors in his comments. I doubt they will take any action, but at least it’s been lodged. I know others are writing too.

Dr Norman Swan: ME/CFS is more psychosomatic than long-COVID

In yesterday’s Coronacast podcast (ABC, Australia), Dr Norman Swan (who infamously interviewed Sharpe and Horton in 2011 about the PACE trial, and has remained stubbornly pro-GET), responded to a listener question about long-COVID. It starts at 8.10, and runs for about a minute...

Sick of the Sick Role: Narratives of What “Recovery” Means to People With CFS/ME, 2020, White et al

Translation (in my best Neil from The Young Ones voice): What even is recovery, anyway? It’s all about how you feel, man. It’s like, recovery is whatever you want it to be. Don’t let The Man tell you you haven’t recovered. If you think you’ve recovered, man, you have. It’s like, really heavy.

Sick of the Sick Role: Narratives of What “Recovery” Means to People With CFS/ME, 2020, White et al

Even by Michael White’s usually bad standards, this is just so incredibly terrible. They’re pretending to want to know patients’ views of recovery, but are just cynically using patients’ words as an excuse to redefine recovery in the way that suits them. So they ask participants about their...

    NICE ME/CFS guideline - draft published for consultation - 10th November 2020

Seems like they’re jumping the gun. GET isn’t scrapped. The guidelines say that unstructured or general exercise programs, or exercise programs based on fixed increments aren’t recommended, and they use GET as an example of an exercise therapy which uses fixed increments. So programs with fixed...

BACME: Position Paper on the management of Myalgic Encephalomyelitis/ Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (ME/CFS), Oct 2020

Does anyone have access to their ‘Therapy and Symptom Management Guide’? Their website says it’s currently under review, and they’ve put up ‘Post-Viral Fatigue - A Guide to Management’ which is dated May 2020. So they’re definitely updating their content. Does anyone still have access to their...

    Australia: News from Emerge Australia

I was worried about that! The clip has been uploaded to YouTube. Unfortunately, the presenter introducing the interview refers to the illness as ‘chronic fatigue’ twice in the beginning (a huge issue for us in Australia), but if you can get past that, the rest is worth it. The highlight for me...
