Long Covid in the media and social media 2023

I propose a new psychiatric disorder: Repetitive Re-Labeling Syndrome (ReReLaS). Defined by the patient's obsession with generating an endless flow of new names and acronyms for currently unexplained diseases, in order to avoid facing up to their complete lack of understanding of those...

Clinician-rated outcomes of patients with functional neurological disorders treated in an outpatient clinic 2023 LaFrance Jr. et al

Global Assessment of Functioning (GAF) and Clinical Global Impression (CGI) both use subjective ratings by the clinician of the patient's status. So the clinicians are self-rating the legitimacy and efficacy of their own subjective interpretation?

    Covid-19 vaccination experiences

re vaccine Still not back to normal. Some headaches, sore across the shoulders/neck/upper back, and sleep is worse than usual. But continuing to improve, and most of the way there, I think.

    Covid-19 vaccination experiences

Anything less than a well fitting N95/P2 standard is basically a waste of time, IMHO.

Intensive Short-Term Dynamic Psychotherapy associated with healthcare reductions in patients with functional seizures 2023 Malda-Castillo et al

Very. ––––––––– No possibility that the diagnosis and/or therapy are inappropriate, even flat out wrong? That would be a very good explanation for lack of therapeutic response. But no, the expert couldn't possibly be wrong. It must be the patient.

    Covid-19 vaccination experiences

All adults are eligible at this stage, I think. How many of them take it up remains to be seen. Also, early evening here now and I am feeling considerably better. Not back to normal, but at this rate should be there in a day or so.

Long Covid in the media and social media 2023

Easiest way to pretend there is no problem is to just not collect any evidence of it in the first place. Unfortunately reality doesn't work that way.

    Covid-19 vaccination experiences

The latest booster is being rolled out here in Australia, and I had mine yesterday (Pfizer version), which is my fifth Covid vax overall and my third booster shot (and second Pfizer). My worst reaction so far. Had a rough night and feeling very sore and tired today. Already had two extra sleeps...

Turing got it wrong. It wasn't how smart and human-like machines could become. It was how dumb and machine-like humans could.

Yep, it isn't patients who are out of touch with reality.

Chronic Fatigue Syndrome/Myalgic Encephalomyelitis: A philosophical investigation, 2021, Byrne (thesis)

If my brief experience with a philosophy department at a major Australian uni in the late 80s (during the heyday of post-modernism) is anything to go by, they have always been this way.

    UK clinic: Harley Therapy

The NHS estimates that 45% of all GP appointments in the UK qualify as for ‘medically unexplained symptoms’ (MUS). Bullshit. Straight power grab on the basis of nothing at all. Since 2018, the NHS has updated ME’s classification from a ‘multi system disorder’ to a medical disorder of the...

Functional somatic disorders, their subtypes, and their association with self-rated health in the German general population 2023 Sattel et al

Functional somatic disorders (FSD) Another cheesy acronym to add to the already large pile of games with words. Do they really think that if they just get the right label it will all click into place? Or is this just trying to continue the cover up of their utter failure to deliver anything of...

A general thread on the PACE trial!

A possible reason is that the 'definitive' study testing one's pet theory did not deliver as one would have wished and one would wish to put some distance between it and oneself.

GDF15 linked to maternal risk of nausea and vomiting during pregnancy 2023 Fejzo et al (hyperemesis gravidarum - morning sickness in pregnancy)

I can't get this out of my head. It is horrifying. If you wanted to make an already very bad, indeed potentially fatal, situation a lot worse this is how to do it. Even if it doesn't kill the patient it is going to do horrendous and probably long-term harm to both her physical and (ironically)...

GDF15 linked to maternal risk of nausea and vomiting during pregnancy 2023 Fejzo et al (hyperemesis gravidarum - morning sickness in pregnancy)

Gosh, aren't women in the 21st century so lucky that kind of attitude no longer exists, and that being female is no longer seen as predisposing to hysterical conversion. Oh wait, it does...
