I wonder if proper explanation would help - that the masks give you no protection, but are to protect others. I wonder what has happened in other countries in terms of masks and messaging and whether people in masks have maintained social distance.
I don't think people would take it that way but I think almost everyone will be assuming that if they're six feet away from someone who isn't coughing and sneezing, they'll be OK - because that's what the govt is telling us all.
Just managed to order some hand sanitiser but it has only 57% ethanol (it was the only sanitiser available). I'm using soap and water to wash my hands but want something for commonly touched surfaces such as light switches etc. I haven't had the energy to tackle these with detergents and don't...
I just want to park here this very sensitive and pro-invisible-chronic-illness-patients tweet from Miranda Hart (Twitter following of 2.3 million):
If the study gets funding, then when we come to launch it, I hope we can ask her to help promote it.
@Andy, @Simon M
I should have added that I did it in stages for exactly that reason and that it took me ages but I understand that it won't be possible at all for a lot of us. Your adaptation sounds like a good one.
I've been dealing with shopping in plastic/waterproof packaging by running a sinkful of hot water and adding as much washing up liquid as I'd use normally and then washing all the stuff as though it's pots and pans, then rinsing it off, drying it, and only then putting it in the fridge/freezer.
Just saw on BBC News 24 that the Office for National Statistics is about to start publishing coronavirus death figures that include deaths in the community, not just in hospitals. I hadn't realised that the figures so far didn't include all deaths.
Yes, because the virus needs its lipid outer layer to function - here's an article about it in The Guardian. I heard on the radio that that's why we need to keep up the handwashing for 20 seconds because that's how long it takes for that lipid layer to start breaking down.
Thanks - I'm surprised to hear that that's the WHO's position, quite honestly, because in all the coverage (at least since the virus escaped China) I don't think I've ever heard the word 'eradication'. I wonder if I've just not been listening properly or if this is a defect in the BBC's coverage...
Just saw on the news that Boris Johnson is writing to everyone in the UK to warn us to expect this to go on for a long time. He could have taken the opportunity to put the above kind of info out.
I'm just amazed that the govt isn't putting out public information broadcasts on the need to sanitise stuff (such as shopping) that you bring into your house, or telling people to cover their faces with a scarf, at least, when they go out to protect others.
We have millions of people on...
Thanks for that, @TiredSam - I'm instructing a solicitor about updating my will but had no idea how to get it witnessed under the current circumstances. Hopefully by the time they've got the work done, there'll be some progress on this.
Thanks very much. Yikes, I'm staying in, then...
Given that we're all starting from no immunity, how long would it be before the immune system can mount a response? Could it be fast enough to eradicate the virus within hours, say? I remember reading about how much contact any molecule in the...
Thanks very much. So is it the case that a single particle of virus is all that's needed to cause an infection?
I'm wondering if any amount of handwashing etc. is enough to protect against that if we've been outside, or whether a single breath from someone getting too close is enough.
I don't...
