Presentation: 'A critical approach to Medically Unexplained Symptoms’

As does the clergy. At least the clergy is informed it needs to stay at arm's length from all things state-related.

I was diagnosed with a rare autoimmune disease called "Relapsing Polychondritis"

It is used chiefly as an anti-protozoal, e.g. malaria and babesisois. It is also used for late stage Lyme (really PTLDS, for those who believe this is an actual thing), I think primarily for its anti-inflammatory properties. I think Aucott, well-known in the world of PTLDS and who is associated...

    Question concerning XMRV

When? Geez, back in 2010 or so? 2011? 2012? I've loss track of the time. What was with her? I suppose I found her to come across as....less than nice? She wasn't alone by any means. It was a raucous wild-west on behalf of many. Lots of bitterness and mayhem. I do not miss those...

    Question concerning XMRV

No. Although I have been involved in several studies, and have been fortunate to pick the brains of some leading researchers directly - including sitting and talking with Mikovits for a couple of hours - it has always been as a patient. But thanks for asking. I swore I would not get involved...

    Question concerning XMRV

I am merely trying to point out that perspective matters, and being on the outside looking in may be different from living something as an active participant.

    Question concerning XMRV

Oh dear! I never meant to upset you. It may just be different to live through something as opposed to hearing about it.

    Question concerning XMRV

Nothing is as clear cut as some versions of history say. I recall the stark consternation at attempts of trial replication. I recall the strange attacks. I don't think it is black and white.

    Question concerning XMRV

Are you guessing or did you experience it all?

    Question concerning XMRV

@Melanie, do you recall how Smith was perceived back then? Were you there? Do you have a feel for the context? As I remember, it did not all fall so neatly into place...

OMF/Mark Davis Research Update, June 2018

I tend to agree with this observation, but most likely for poor reasons. I have been eager to hear more about Mark Davis research (and I remain so), but in large part due to his background in Lyme. My understanding was that he approached the Lyme conundrum from this autoimmune perch, and I find...

David Tuller: Trial By Error: My Letter to MP Monaghan About BMJ Studies

It's beginning to look like there may be a bunch of biggest medical scandals. ME/CFS, Lyme, Periodic Paralysis...Who knew humans could not only be so corrupt/incompetent/inert, but turns out there could be so many vying for this lofty goal. I am torn between contestants.

Publications that show ME is biological

Relative to the CPET metric for attempting to demonstrate PEM, I have often wondered what happens if the subject is suffering from PEM during the initial CPET. Simply traveling for the test could trigger PEM, and depending in part on how long one has been sick with ME/CFS, PEM - according to...

Persistent Borrelia Infection in Patients with Ongoing Symptoms of Lyme Disease, Middelveen et al, 2018

She is also just a classy person. Lots of the hardcore Lyme researchers are. I reached out to her once about treatment, and she didn't know me, and she is no clinician, but she was caring and inquisitive and, ultimately, helpful - without ever once overstepping her bounds as a researcher. You...

Persistent Borrelia Infection in Patients with Ongoing Symptoms of Lyme Disease, Middelveen et al, 2018

Agreed. Moreover, some of those spirochetes were found in tissue, and were cross-checked against 3 PCRs from 3 independent labs. They even had the imprimatur of Alan Barbour, which is very impressive. Compound these findings with Bb persistence demonstrated in vitro following standard abx...

Persistent Borrelia Infection in Patients with Ongoing Symptoms of Lyme Disease, Middelveen et al, 2018

@Hutan , just as the IDSA (in the US) has a tight group of authors whose name seem to appear on Lyme studies almost regularly, so too does its TBD counterpart, ILADS. In fact, when you see Stricker and Middleveen and Sapi, it is pretty much an easy call to guess the direction of the given...

Persistent Borrelia Infection in Patients with Ongoing Symptoms of Lyme Disease, Middelveen et al, 2018

Cultures were done histopathologically (hello Lipkin), and tested against what I believe were three discrete PCR metrics and with at least one independent lab. This will be hard to counter. The usual subjects, though, were authors. They will get nailed for that.

Award-winning essay of the NJME/CFSA 2017 Medical Scholar Program: "A Narrative Synthesis for Myalgic Encephalomyelitis/Chronic Fatigue Syndrome"

I hate to discourage bright minds, and I think this kid is smart. He/she tells a plausible tale, but that plausible tales - whether true or false - are a dime a dozen is a hard fact that is cross-elastic across industries. To me this is a good story cobbled together by theories or conjectures...

Award-winning essay of the NJME/CFSA 2017 Medical Scholar Program: "A Narrative Synthesis for Myalgic Encephalomyelitis/Chronic Fatigue Syndrome"

It's great that young intelligent minds are being channeled our way. It sucks that this boils down in many ways to just another psych iteration. Sorry if my emotions and the stress of reading all this is too much for me....

    Foot pain

I tested positive for it a couple of times before I ever had a targeted regimen. It was a cocktail that included Rifampin, I think, and at least one other abx (or two?), but I don't recall what they were. That was similar to what I experienced, as I recall. I hated standing after sleep. I need...
