Pathogens associated with triggering ME/CFS - discussion thread

Interesting. I had a course of high dose clarithromycin at the beginning of this month for a large abscess. As well as sorting out the abscess, it seems to have righted whatever was causing the IBS I've had for six years, and the drenching hot flushes I've had since 2005 every time my bladder is...

The science of craniocervical instability and other spinal issues and their possible connection with ME/CFS - discussion thread

Gosh, that's awful. Let's hope she improves as she recovers from the surgery.

Maximal handgrip strength can predict maximal physical performance in patients with chronic fatigue, 2020, Jammes et al

Indeed, and it's pretty useless as an indicator if you also have arthritis...

Blogpost by Super Pooped (Hannah Radenkova): What no one tells you about being Housebound

Lovely. And no bright colours on the screen that you have to cover up before you can start reading...always a bonus!

Coronavirus - worldwide spread and control

It's especially hard to estimate the prevalence now they've discovered someone with an active infection but no symptoms of illness. It's therefore possible that people can spread it without even knowing they have it. I agree it's not worth worrying at the moment, specially when you think about...

Chronic Lyme Disease: a discussion of the epidemiological data

Yes, possibly. I didn't even know ticks existed until years later, and it was probably the early 2000s before I'd heard of Lyme disease. If one of us had found a tick, we might have asked about it; as it was, I assumed the rash was a scrape from scrambling hillside scree or climbing up rock...

Chronic Lyme Disease: a discussion of the epidemiological data

Thanks to @Michiel Tack for this work...and thanks to @Peter Trewhitt for elucidating how my brain works! I'm frustratingly unsure whether I or not was exposed to Lyme, but because of that, I'm interested in the topic. I've always found debates about post-Lyme syndrome a bit suspect –...

Which computer for someone with Parkinson's Disease

Me too! Most people learn to compose written work in childhood, without really being aware of how long it takes to learn to do it at reasonable speed. Dictation is every bit as much of a skill, and I think anyone who's not used to doing it would struggle to compose more than a sentence or two...

Why do we crash so quick when upright/sitting?

I don't have problems sitting up unless I'm already crashed, but I really struggle with leaning forward to plant things in my raised beds. It's bizarre how much difference a relatively small change of position makes!

Which computer for someone with Parkinson's Disease

I found speech to text much more tiring than typing, specially as the applications seem to be trained mainly to understand American accents. (These are somewhat thin on the ground in the part of Yorkshire where I was born!) It takes so long to keep repeating the phrase until the software's...

The Prevalence of Pediatric Myalgic Encephalomyelitis/Chronic Fatigue Syndrome in a Community-Based Sample (2020) Jason et al.

Me too, I became ill at 17 but wasn't diagnosed until many years later. It didn't help that I'm autistic, and hadn't learned to talk with doctors very well (I lacked 'theory of mind' until well into my late 20s). I'm a renter living on benefits, but it's not the reason I stopped using a...

UK Genome Wide Association Study (GWAS) project - draft website goes live, feedback sought on recruitment plan, and updates

It's excellent news, isn't it – very encouraging. This is true, but so far no money has been available to spend on publicity, and I don't think GP practices or hospital clinics have been approached yet (it's too early to get them on board). I think if the team can utilise these channels, as...

Efficacy, side effects and withdrawal effects of carnitine

Thanks for posting your experiences with it, @strategist – it's an interesting topic. I found liquid carnitine like amphetamine or something, causing shaking, dizziness, vastly increased orthostatic intolerance, and a wired brain. I can take so little without rapid side effects that it's not...

Article: Study gave me purpose when the future seemed bleak Jan 2020

Yes! I was good at languages at school, but since becoming ill I've made concerted attempts to learn two. Nothing doing – I can neither grasp the grammar nor retain the vocabulary.

Permanent Health Insurance - almost time to apply

True – I've never earned a lot and haven't had access to a company pension scheme since about 1983, but I did persuade my employer to make me redundant instead of cutting my hours by more than half (which is what they wanted to do). I even did the budget, pointing out that they could employ...

Permanent Health Insurance - almost time to apply

It's always good to review paperwork in your own time, before you get to the point where your hand is forced. Coming out of work is quite an emotional process, even if you know it's probably going to be the best decision you ever made! It's a big adjustment, which takes some time. I live alone...

Article in Guardian: UK benevolent funds hand out £216m as hardship grows - features Emily Beardall (AfME) Jan 2020

Not really true in my case. I've recovered better function than before a couple of times, after a relapse forced me to rest for an extended period. The gains weren't enormous – and were almost certainly due to the rest – but they weren't a worsening. My function now is somewhat lower than it...

Permanent Health Insurance - almost time to apply

I'm so sorry you're at this stage – I've been through it, too (only without the insurance!) I've never had access to anything like that, but sometimes in these situations they may need your employer to agree first that you're not well enough to continue. It's worth at least being mentally...
