New draft NICE guidelines for chronic pain emphasises exercise, CBT and acupuncture over medication

I couldn't find the criticism by C. Eccleston, Amanda Williams et al. on the forum so just leave the link here: Eccleston, C., Aldington, D., Moore, A., & de C Williams, A. C. (2021). Pragmatic but flawed: the NICE guideline on chronic pain. The Lancet, 397(10289), 2029–2031...

The biopsychosocial model of illness: a model whose time has come (2017) Wade, DT & Halligan, PW

Sorry for posting another annoying paper but given the latest utterances of diverse spokespersons of the Royal Colleges, it seems to me that this line of thinking is more widespread among doctors, also in the UK, than I had thought. From the abstract, I found the following line of thinking...

Trial By Error: Good Long Covid Coverage from Atlantic; Skeptical Coverage from New Yorker and Others

Yes, thank you @dave30th . Agree. Haven't read the article in The New Yorker, but I think there actually needs to be more caution in assessing the epidemiological and biomedical research that's been done, too. We discuss that topic related to ME research time and again on the forum. For...

BPS proponents don't respond well to criticism

I'm sorry @Obermann you have to deal with this telling behavior of a BPS proponent. I'm not well enough ATM to comment properly -- just leaving here the idea to expand the content if this thread a bit, and adding some hopefully self-explaining cues and links here. 1) Rejecting FOI requests as...

Non-hospitalised Children & young people (CYP) with Long Covid (The CLoCk Study), 2021, Stephenson and Crawley

It seems the participants weren't asked about PEM or any form of (delayed) post exertion symptom exacerbation?

Non-hospitalised Children & young people (CYP) with Long Covid (The CLoCk Study), 2021, Stephenson and Crawley

Had a look at the SMC expert reactions and saw that some of my questions already were covered in David Strain's comment: Dr David Strain, Senior Clinical Lecturer, University of Exeter, said: “There are some significant limitations in this study that may, if anything, under-estimate the effect...

Non-hospitalised Children & young people (CYP) with Long Covid (The CLoCk Study), 2021, Stephenson and Crawley

I think it makes sense to ask about previous mental and physical health but if they didn't ask about actual medical/ psychiatric diagnoses -- not so much. It looks like they didn't ask about frequency and duration of previous health issues and not even about ongoing chronic illness?

Non-hospitalised Children & young people (CYP) with Long Covid (The CLoCk Study), 2021, Stephenson and Crawley

Apologies, once again only able to skim -- anyone knows and has the time and energy to post what exactly the study investigated? From skimming it seems, they initially only grouped according to positive or negative test results, and three months after the test then retrospectively asked...

Factors associated with work status in chronic fatigue syndrome (2019) S A M Stevelink, N T Fear, M Hotopf, T Chalder

Thanks, Trish, and again apologies for not being on point. I tried now several times to look up in the draft guideline what it says about patients' coping with work, especially about younger patients' coping with planning a career, and doctors' roles in issuing sick leaves, referring to...

Factors associated with work status in chronic fatigue syndrome (2019) S A M Stevelink, N T Fear, M Hotopf, T Chalder

I wonder if in the UK there is something like a partial retirement based on reduced earning capacity so that people get a financial compensation if they cant' work full time without urging you to either approve to a pre-defined phased return nor to try how you get on with a part time job on...

Factors associated with work status in chronic fatigue syndrome (2019) S A M Stevelink, N T Fear, M Hotopf, T Chalder

A summary of papers in which BPS proponents disproved both their current hypotheses and interpretations of findings in past research papers and reviews but fail to acknowledge this would be fine I think. The biggest challenge of that task seems to be to focus on the most relevant points, as...
