Typing myalgic encephalomyelitis by infection at onset: A DecodeME study, 2023, Bretherick et al

I can experience a drop in mood during PEM. It lasts only a day or two and gets better with rest.

The bidirectional effect of stress and functionality in MS and the interaction role of anxiety, coping and social support 2023 Moss-Morris et al

Is it possible to demonstrate causality with these methods? I have doubts. Also the authors make the assumption that the thing that is called "stress" that is being measured is something that is modifiable with CBT. It could also be a sign of a biological process that is not modifiable. Or be...

Typing myalgic encephalomyelitis by infection at onset: A DecodeME study, 2023, Bretherick et al

Does the "more likely to report clinical depression" group differ in other ways? Is this clinical depression being confused with ME/CFS, or is it ME/CFS that is misdiagnosed as depression because the lack of infection makes clinicians think depression instead of ME/CFS, or does this group...

Long- und Post-COVID versus Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, 2023, Hausotter

He calls graded exercise therapy "pacing". I also looked at reference 3. The descriptions of a patient sounded more like POTS or a form of OI to me, as typical symptoms of OI like chest pain and cognitive impairment ("empty headedness") are mentioned as arising from short walks.

    A new consensus? - ME/CFS skeptic blog

I suspect the reason that GRADE does not allow for the possibility that a study is so bad as to be useless is that it wants to be attractive to the industry. In practice it's probably possible to sell a treatment even with marginal or dubious benefits, so what the industry needs from a system...

Efficacy of cognitive behavioral therapy targeting severe fatigue following COVID-19: results of a randomized controlled trial 2023, Kuut, Knoop et al

It's impossible to have serious fatigue and not have reduced activity levels. The BPS people are telling nonsense again.

Efficacy of cognitive behavioral therapy targeting severe fatigue following COVID-19: results of a randomized controlled trial 2023, Kuut, Knoop et al

The perpetuating factors of fatigue according to BPS people. It looks like thinly veiled patient blaming. Or at least sets the stage for it. And I doubt that there's any real evidence behind it. It's probably all the usual deliberate confusion of correlation with causation that we've seen so...

Socioeconomic determinants of ME/CFS in Norway: a registry study, Hilland and Anthun, 2023

My guess is that higher socioeconomic status affects the ability to obtain a diagnosis, in particular when the problem is not easily diagnosable.

    Research news from Bhupesh Prusty

From what I understood he thinks that herpesviruses in bone marrow, and their effect on the cells that develop there, are key.

    Research news from Bhupesh Prusty

I can understand how it would be hard to contain excitement if something promising was found, and how people need to believe in the possibility of making a breakthrough to stay motivated.

Dynamic alterations in cerebral hemodynamics measured by portable near-infrared spectroscopy in orthostatic hypotension and intolerance, 2023

I know that state of only being able to listen to another person talking to me and responding with yes or no, and not being capable of properly expressing myself or thinking. It's just another manifestation of poor blood flow to the brain.

Diane Shipley: Knowledge of Missing Out

I didn't experience Schadenfreude but felt like healthy people were getting a glimpse of what it means to be chronically ill. Just a glimpse because they were not having symptoms or being met with disbelief or hostility for staying at home.

Do we know if genome analysis was part of the intramural study?

Dynamic alterations in cerebral hemodynamics measured by portable near-infrared spectroscopy in orthostatic hypotension and intolerance, 2023

I can feel clearly when the blood drains away from the head during certain movements. And also how good it feels when certain exercises improve blood flow to the brain. Alternating between sitting and standing is a good way to provoke low blood flow to the brain but not the only problematic...

What adaptions are effective to cognitive behavioural interventions for adults with long-term conditions and medically unexplained symptoms? 2020

My experience is that most of the mental health harm caused comes from the theoretical framework that propose that distress is independent of context, is unjustified and caused by wrong thought processes (that is, the cause is found in the psyche, and not in circumstances). This is no accident...

Severe difficulties with eating in ME/CFS

Here is a study that I came across that investigated the genetics of eosinophilic esophagitis, which can cause severe difficulty eating. A feeding tube is sometimes required. One of the study participants later developed what seems to be ME/CFS although in the study it is suggested there was...

Independent advisory group for the full update of the Cochrane review on exercise therapy and ME/CFS (2020), led by Hilda Bastian

If you drag it out long enough, you can say that it's time to cancel the project because it has gone on long enough without progress. ;)

A general thread on the PACE trial!

I think Wessely tried to distance himself from the PACE trial when he understood that the data was showing CBT/GET did not work.
