A guide to functional disease for a trauma conscious generation, 2021, Whitfield

What a lot of nonsense. I note that this is copyrighted to the Royal College of Physicians, 2021. Andrew Whitfield is the author, and clearly he was drinking too much Kool aid as he wrote this guide for junior doctors. He seems convinced that these conditions (weakness in specific parts of...

News about Long Covid including its relationship to ME/CFS 2020 to 2021

'Oversight' is quite a troublesome word in English, with two quite different meanings. In this article, they obviously meant that patients can become active agents in the management of their condition, but the other meaning is more accurate. By promoting the idea that patients can just manage...

UK House of Lords/ House of Commons - relevant people and questions

Yes, hopefully someone who has looked at this in detail will comment. But, my understanding is that 'indirectness' in relation to the PACE trial relates to the percentage of people who did not have ME/CFS (i.e. did not have the core symptom of PEM). e.g. this comment about a study: "Serious...

UK House of Lords/ House of Commons - relevant people and questions

Your letter makes a good point about the relationship between NICE and Cochrane, while Cochrane has such low standards for its research evaluation. I haven't got around to looking properly at GRADE but I understand from others that the fundamental flaw of unblinded+subjective outcomes may not...

Acute Corticotropin-Releasing Factor Receptor Type 2 Agonism Result in Sustained Improvement in ME/CFS - Pereira, Bateman et al, 2021

It's nice to see Dr Bateman dialling back the expectations about CT-38 and making it clear that she and her clinic are not promoting the drug. It's still a bit surprising though that she is as positive about the prospects for the drug as she is. I'm not sure what she is seeing.

    News from South Africa

An article about Long Covid in South Africa (first posted about here) Covid-19: Clearer picture of long Covid slowly emerging There's some good commentary from Professor Jonny Peter, Head of the Division of Allergology and Clinical Immunology at the University of Cape Town and Groote Schuur...

Why do BPS proponents keep ignoring the evidence against their ideas?

(Veering off-topic, but yes, I've had exactly the same thought lately. I spent a year at Oxford, and, coming from New Zealand, I was utterly amazed at the colonial and class attitudes that were deeply embedded there. It's no coincidence that a number of the BPS proponents are based at Oxford...

Ganglionic Acetylcholine Receptor Antibodies in Postural Tachycardia Syndrome. Bryarly et al. 8/2021

Great to see a negative result from a good sized study being published. (edit: I mean, ... and the negative result being clearly presented in the abstract, rather than spun as a positive result.)

Asthenic disorders as a manifestation of chronic fatigue syndrome, 2021, Putilina

I suspect the use of 'asthenic disorders' in this paper is mainly a result of the translation of the original from Russian.

Asthenic disorders as a manifestation of chronic fatigue syndrome, 2021, Putilina

Interesting definitions, especially Trish's one. Before seeing those, I had wondered if asthenia might be a useful term for describing a symptom of ME/CFS, as the definitions I had seen focused on the easy fatiguability, and the larger than normal effort required to move. Of course it's part...

    Covid-19 vaccination experiences

It's becoming better known that the vaccination can cause myocarditis. Typically, if it does occur it's mild, resolves on its own and only lasts a couple of weeks, but it can be a lot more serious. When I had my second vaccination a few days ago, the nurses were warning people that if they...
