This woman with [fibromyalgia] wants to end her life, but can't get assisted death

I just can't accept that there is no medical/surgical help for her. I need find out whether she has tried an intrathecal (spinal) device. This, as far I know, is still used for intractable pain and give the patient opioid type drugs or any other useful substances directly into the central...

This woman with [fibromyalgia] wants to end her life, but can't get assisted death

So sad...and at age 27. I question whether a very talented anaesthesia-pain doc might help her enough for her to question her decision--IV sedation by visiting nurses (expensive) because some of the symptoms can change and lessen as time passes; perhaps there is some adaptation within the...

Is sex worth the pain? Willingness to engage in sexual activity among partnered women with fibromyalgia, 2017, Gullickson et al

Indeed, the severity problem, as in the quote about a bad knee. Bad knee? If you have severe fibro, it's not just one, two, or three body parts in pain, it's a screaming type pain all over the body. I think the quality of the research is nil. I wouldn't trust what comes next from the...

Overdosed with coffee - crashed really badly.

Well, if the coffee was single origin (one finca) Central American light roast then maybe it was worth it?

Metagenome-wide association study of gut microbiome revealed novel aetiology of rheumatoid arthritis in the Japanese population (2019) Kishikawa et al

Scanning the whole article, I just wonder what the effects of common RA drugs might have on the biome of RA people vs. normal controls. I did not see any mention of that. Or are their diets different? Some are on DMARDs.

Is sex worth the pain? Willingness to engage in sexual activity among partnered women with fibromyalgia, 2017, Gullickson et al

FYI: a bit of extraneous detail with my humble apologies I have fibro and I had a partner prior to 2000. He divorced me the same time as I couldn't work anymore. He denied it was because of my illness. I was 50 and he said I just looked old to him. He was 52. He was also having work problems...

Domestic abuse survivors twice at risk of long-term illnesses

Compared to the increase in fibromyalgia diagnosis in the exposed group, the increase in ME/CFS was slight.

Is insulin resistance the cause of fibromyalgia? (Prelim report) (2019) Pappolla et al - Retracted Dec. 2019

These are not very informed researchers, viz a viz review boards (IRBs) and patient identity protections.

What happens to muscles in fibromyalgia syndrome, 2019,

Just for the record, from research in the 1990s, no pathology found in the muscle tissue via microscopic analysis of fibro patients.

Pain in ME–what helps you and what can I do?

I have moderate to severe fibromyalgia and yes, I must stop any repetitive muscle activity because vast areas of my body are centrally sensitized. I use hot pepper cream (0.1% capsaicin--but have to be careful not to get on hands or privates) for mild pain relief of several hours. It also has...

Unravelling Fibromyalgia-Steps Toward Individualized Management (2017) Hauser, Clauw, et al.

I've been reading research since my 1996 diagnosis and wondered about the research results stating high incidence of childhood abuse in FM patients, as well as high history of mental illness. (The team out of Oregon Health Sciences Center did some of that research, as well as developing the FIQ...

Unravelling Fibromyalgia-Steps Toward Individualized Management (2017) Hauser, Clauw, et al.

https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/abs/pii/S1526590017307009 What I liked is this simple approach to categorizing fibro: as mild, moderate, and severe. Based on daily functioning. Patient an active partner in determining management of illness.

Effects of attachment-based compassion therapy on brain-derived neurotrophic factor and inflammation among fibromyalgia patients, 2019, Montero-Marin

You know, when I first read the title of this research, I said to myself: oh great, the health care professionals are going to be compassionate toward you and display attachment behaviors (like the concerned care of a good mother, always wanting the best for you). Well, no. Not only no, but...

Mayo Clinic Guide to Fibromyalgia: Strategies to Take Back Your Life By A. Abril M.D. & B.K. Bruce Ph.D. L.P., Mayo Clinic Press (2019)

Good luck on taking back your life. Not going to happen. You adjust. "Taking back your life" signifies that you will return to your life; the title is that glorious placebo of false hope. The reality is quite stark. You have a vastly reduced life (depending on severity). Mayo advice seems...

Ron Davis’s big immune study is looking at HLA genes (HLA, WTF?) Here’s the story. [Simon M blog]

I've done pre-transplantation blood work (HLA typing) on dialysis patients. HLA of donor and recipient patient have to be the same (to "match") otherwise immediate organ rejection happens. Nice to hear more about HLA system.

Effects of attachment-based compassion therapy on brain-derived neurotrophic factor and inflammation among fibromyalgia patients, 2019, Montero-Marin

Nice introduction in the study, a review of what is known about fibromyalgia. I would posit that the principles of attachment-based compassion develop organically in the person with fibro (in her own way and in her own time). A sort of radical gratitude toward oneself and toward others...

Acute effect of strength training on mood of patients with fibromyalgia syndrome, 2019, Andrade et al

As someone diagnosed in 1996 with moderate-severe fibro, there are times when lifting a fork to eat something is painful. I have never, ever been able to do 3 reps of lifting soup cans, much less 12 reps w/ repeats, or using Therabands, weights, or extending my arms eccentrically. Legs are...

NPR: The Placebo Effect Works And You Can Catch It From Your Doctor

Medical establishment has lost their grip on hard science. Caved to popularity of unproven and unprovable alternative (complementary) bs. Yes, medicine doesn't have many, many answers. Wishful thinking, placebo response, oh what a lively waste of money it is. Patients are at fault, too, for...
