Consequences of sarcolemma fatigue on maximal muscle strength production in patients with ME/CFS, 2023, Retornaz et al.

I'm not sure they do, they just report it. It's possible they don't yet have an explanation.

USA: “Movie About M.E." and "Banner for Awareness" (formerly "One Name Campaign")

That's going to work marvellously well in a country where the annual statement of earnings and contributions issued to all taxpayers has been known as a P60 since WWII. Might I suggest P45 instead? For him, I mean.

USA: “Movie About M.E." and "Banner for Awareness" (formerly "One Name Campaign")

I understand why they want to do this, but even if it attracted support from heavyweight governmental organisations, it would take years to implement internationally. In the meantime we could well discover more about what causes these illnesses, which would probably mean starting the process...

Speculations about the genetics of ME/CFS and DecodeME

Maybe whoever invented Chronic Fatigue Syndrome trademarked it so that we have to treat it as a proper noun, like Toilet Duck.

Consequences of sarcolemma fatigue on maximal muscle strength production in patients with ME/CFS, 2023, Retornaz et al.

Another study finding some differences between patients with shorter/longer disease duration. I don't really understand what sarcolemma fatigue is, but it doesn't read as if these differences are simply the result of adaptation.

Well-known, famous people with ME/CFS (public thread)

Oh, absolutely. I only meant celebrities who don't have any vested interest, such as Martine McCutcheon and Marina Diamandis. Sometimes they may post (or be quoted as saying, not necessarily accurately) things that are slightly frustrating, but they're not actively working against fellow...

    Liquid sugar hit

Glad you've got some suggestions that might be workable @Haveyoutriedyoga. I hope they work out, it can make such a difference. You seem to have the opposite of what I experience. In my case, simple sugars reduce my muscles to jelly so that I stagger about as if I'm drunk, and also induces pain...

Well-known, famous people with ME/CFS (public thread)

The trouble is that, as we learn about our illness, most of us probably go through phases where we look seriously at strategies we'd later consider nonsense. There can't be many ME patients who haven't at some stage got hooked into trying supplements, for instance, or enthusiastically sent...

    Liquid sugar hit

Could you dissolve sugar or honey in bottles of water? They might need a shake before you put the straw in, but there's no other additives and it'd be very cheap. It might need some trial and error to discover how much you need to add, but if you fill some sports-type water bottles with sugar...

Inspiring stories from people with ME/CFS

There's also Stuart Murdoch of the Scottish band, Belle and Sebastian. I hesitated a moment before contributing, in case focusing on people who've achieved a lot just rams home for some members how much of their potential ME has destroyed. It's also easy to forget how much people's success may...

Borax-drinking TikTok trend slammed: ‘You’re not a washing machine’

Why has half the world turned into absolute gibbering nincompoops? Disclosure: I did hear my nan say something very like this in 1968 and I am the same age as her now, so I acknowledge the potential for bias in the results of my survey.

How to report findings that sick people are more sick

I forgot to answer the question as usual. I think when representing findings like this, there has to be acknowledgement of a tipping point. Work is good for health in many ways. But there comes a point where a person's level of impairment means the balance shifts, and instead of being...

How to report findings that sick people are more sick

In this instance, I can't decide whether the study is trying to suggest that people should be encouraged to exercise more. It might be doing that. Alternatively, it might be reporting that fatigue is an additional impairment that these patients have to deal with, on top of their other MS...

Paul Garner on Long Covid and ME/CFS - BMJ articles and other media.

Well, he's been spotted prowling outside. Hopefully the locks will hold. I might replace "reprehensible" with "slightly tragic attention-seeking" though.

Evidence of a Novel Mitochondrial Signature in Systemic Sclerosis Patients with Chronic Fatigue Syndrome 2023,van Eeden et al

In the absence of a marker, what we mainly lack is an adequate screening tool for PEM. A questionnaire that doesn't lead patients too much, perhaps along the lines of the HADS scale (which I think uses techniques such as asking the same question in different ways). In most cases PEM ought to be...

Yes, they couldn't write "Women with fibromyalgia", because nobody would be surprised.
