    Myalgia, amitriptyline and alternatives

Have you ever had your vitamin D level measured? Do you know if it is optimal? I found that improving my vitamin D level up to optimal (100 - 150 nmol/L or 40 - 60 ng/mL) had an impressive effect on reducing muscle pain. If your doctor won't test it for you, you can get it tested privately...

    I've gone nocturnal again :(

Yes, I always feel at my worst in the mornings. I'm at my best, physically and cognitively, when most people are starting to wind down for the day. So, for example, late afternoon or early evening I can often go to the supermarket and can push a trolley around quite normally and at a healthy...

Trial By Error: A Terrific Piece about ME/CFS on Australian TV | 4 April 2018 | David Tuller

Excellent video. I'm ashamed to say, however, that until I watched it I had never given any thought to how David Tuller is coping with the work he is doing. He must be under absolutely enormous pressure. I hope that the pressure isn't going to make him ill.

Forward ME Group – Bodily Stress Syndrome

This article/paper can be found here : http://sci-hub.tw/10.1093/fampra/cmx033 A quote from it : Imagine a patient who has a physical health problem. The doctor doesn't believe the patient and decides they are mentally ill. They also put a code on the patient's notes (I used to know what it...

Forward ME Group – Bodily Stress Syndrome

Surely that slide in post #10 was produced in 2010, based on what it says in the bottom right-hand corner. Is it still relevant?

Rethinking the treatment of CFS — a reanalysis and evaluation of findings from a recent major trial of GET and CBT (2018) Wilshire et al.

Via Peter Tatchell's twitter (linked above) I got to this link : https://www.whatdotheyknow.com/request/part_funding_of_the_pace_trial_b A quote from the DWP on that link : Whenever I read any kind of comment like this it always make me think of the Auchwitz entrance with its motto "Arbeit...

Vox published a podcast detailing how “pain acceptance” is “gaining traction” among American doctors as a response to the opioid epidemic....

The only people who could say such a thing are those who've never suffered long-term untreated or under-treated pain. I suspect that the death rate from suicide will sky-rocket. What use is a doctor who can't or won't help with pain?

Personality and Perfectionism in CFS, 2008, Chalder & Deary

I've never heard of this man. He sounds like a mysogynist. Why do so many of them decide to go into medicine? Is this him? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stephen_Straus

Article: ‘You smiled at me so you’re not depressed’: What’s the most patronising thing your doctor has ever said to you about your mental health?

I had "good manners" drummed into me when I was a child, as well as the idea that I mustn't show I was in pain or in distress because I had to be "stoical". It is like a straitjacket on how I interact with people in all sorts of situations. Looking back I'm not surprised that I was diagnosed...

Merryn Crofts - media and inquest

I hadn't realised that Merryn's death occurred so long ago. Perhaps it is appearing in the papers now because the parents have gone public?

Article: ‘You smiled at me so you’re not depressed’: What’s the most patronising thing your doctor has ever said to you about your mental health?

I suffered from severe depression (for very good reasons) in my teens. I was referred to someone - a psychiatrist who just saw me once - and I was later told by my GP that I had been diagnosed with "normal teenage angst".

Merryn Crofts - media and inquest

Higher prevalence of ‘low T3 syndrome’ in patients with chronic fatigue syndrome: A case-control study (2018) Ruiz-Núñez et al.

[My emphasis] The bit in bold strikes me as being bizarre. Considering how many insults have been flung at people with ME/CFS, suggesting that they are lazy, attention-seekers, hypochondriacs, don't want to work, want to live off benefits, and are aggressive and dangerous activists who are as...

United Kingdom: Science Media Centre (including Fiona Fox)

I have just read this quote from the article : My perception of current news : I remember years ago (in the 1990s and before?) that Greenpeace and Friends of the Earth would often be quoted in articles or would appear in interviews on the news. But they appear to have vanished off the face of...

    I've gone nocturnal again :(

One thing that 5-HTP does is it raises cortisol. I don't know what the mechanism is that makes that happen. I imagine that would cause adverse effects in quite a lot of people. I have very occasionally taken more than 50mg 5-HTP, and my reaction is to get the jitters and internal shakes, and...
