This is reminiscent of the WWI idea that ordinary soldiers who were less intelligent manifested their anxiety somatically, such as hysterical paralysis, whereas the more articulate more intelligent officers manifested theirs as a stammer.
Somatic symptoms as an indicator of class.
Thank you @Grigor for pointing out the quote
It seems bizarre to suggest that a psychiatric condition and/or behaviour should have such a significant and systematic causal effect on such as intelligence that is generally seen as relatively fixed. Further though this admits of the possibility...
I believe, though without concrete data, that my own intelligence is inversely related to the number of symptoms associated with my ME.
Having two psychology degrees, a further clinical qualification and some twenty years experience working with people with neurological conditions I could argue...
I agree, we lack a good ‘natural history’ or quantitive description of ME and its variation between individuals or over time within an individual.
There are a number of immune related phenomenon that are not yet adequately described let alone understood:
- are there some pathogens that never...
Here is a link to a thread discussing the flue vaccine here at S4ME https://www.s4me.info/threads/the-flu-jab-saves-lives.5747/#post-103894 , which discusses a number of the issues.
My personal experience when I did have the vaccine was a negative reaction not unlike flue itself, and also...
I don’t think there is a straight forward answer to this. Some people report no problems and others report significant problems. We might have done a poll on this here, but I could be making it up.
The British ME Association have a quite good information sheet on whether to have the flue...
Wikipedia (see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Identity_and_Democracy_Party ) describe the Identity and Democracy Party as nationalist, far right and Eurosceptic, which might explain why their members make up half of those that voted against or abstained on this issue.
Not yet seen any thing here in the British press, but not surprising given our press’ reluctance to report anything positive about the EU or at times it feels ME.
However the ME Association have posted on it, see...
If someone has a medically poorly understood condition aren’t they going to focus on symptoms to try to understand more about their condition.
If my roof has a intermittent leak that the builder can not explain I am going to focus on my roof until I work out what is wrong with it so I can get...
To those like me who had no idea what Gwibitang was, I just looked it up and it is a herbal formula used in traditional Korean medicine.
Unfortunately the list of ingredients I found in a couple of academic papers meant nothing to me so I will not share links I found.
Here is information on the project supervisors from the University website
Dr. Amie-Louise Prior - https://www.cardiffmet.ac.uk/health/staff/Pages/Amie-Louise-Prior.aspx
From the link above it looks that Dr Prior’s role would be more to do with the processes of the research and being a...
Pre ME I did not startle easily, but do now.
However, given I live a very different lifestyle, much much quieter, only going out every few weeks (pre lock down), only infrequently have anyone other than carers in my home, is this related to the ME or the resultant lifestyle?
