Simon Wessely: ‘ECT is in my own advance directive’

I guess big part of the problem with this treatment comes from the denial of side effects. Just like with antidepressants and withdrawal, which was dismissed for a long time, but is finally gaining recognition, the promotion of ECT as this magical tool without any major side effects reminds me...

Simon Wessely: ‘ECT is in my own advance directive’

Should be interesting: Motion ‘This house believes that electro-convulsive therapy (ECT) has no place in modern medicine.’

Is a CPET safe for PWME?

Not necesarily. Going up to anaerobic threshold may be enough, because as others have mentioned that's where the biggest difference is between pwme and controls.

Immunoadsorption to remove ß2 adrenergic receptor antibodies in Chronic Fatigue Syndrome CFS/ME (2018) Scheibenbogen et al

I could swear that I read somewhere that autoantibodies have to be somehow activated or actually primed to do damage only when the certain conditions are met, like if some kind of immune cells get activated? I could be talking complete nonsense though... so sorry for that, but I just thought...

Myalgic Encephalomyelitis (ME) or What? An Operational Definition, 2018, Frank Twisk

It seems like the right wqy to go, but I sometimes wonder if subtyping is at all possible at this point? From what I've read here on forums, it seems like every patient is quite unique, even though there are many overlapping symptoms.

New Scientist: Probiotics are mostly useless and can actually hurt you

Well that's interesting! Especially given that my problems actually were triggered by probiotics.. I thought the thinking was that probiotics don't colonisd the gut, but just pass through. Hmm.. It makes sense. It is known that fecal microbiota is just part of the whole picture. Unless they're...

2 Day CPET discussion - is it evidence that GET is harmful, and is it a biomarker?

But isn't that a bit problematic? From recent https://www.frontiersin.org/articles/10.3389/fped.2018.00242/full That's why I'm a bit hesitant to undergo this test, because if I get a 10% reduction on day 2 someone can always dismiss it as non significant..

Cardiopulmonary Exercise Test Methodology for Assessing Exertion Intolerance in ME/CFS, 2018, Stevens et al

It's a really nice overview, especially to hand to someone who doesn't know much about it, although I'm a bit disappointed that they didn't include a table or graph which would summasire the changes that are most common in all studies and most specific for ME/CFS and how big those changes can...

Extracellular vesicles are increased in the serum of children with autism spectrum disorder, contain mitochondrial DNA, and stimulate human microglia

There was some research into EV in ME/CFS and there seems to be ongoing research into this so I thought this may be interesting: https://jneuroinflammation.biomedcentral.com/articles/10.1186/s12974-018-1275-5#Abstract

RSM The NHS at 70 Podcast: Episode 8: Prof Sir Simon Wessely - The Challenges for Mental Health

Maybe you're right. I mean there are rational explanations how that may work without resorting to deconditioning/false beliefs psychobabble. Simply letting yourself be relaxed and have hope may reduce stress levels quite a bit, especially for someone who previously was depressed and stressed...

RSM The NHS at 70 Podcast: Episode 8: Prof Sir Simon Wessely - The Challenges for Mental Health

IMO, PACE style CBT/GET benefits no one. The only positive thing that could come out of it is what Wessely mentioned in the interview. Patients want to be believed and something that doesn't seem 'too stupid'. In other words, they want understanding and hope. I even think that things like Gupta...
