ME/CFS and gulf war illness patients exhibit increased humoral responses to herpesviruses-encoded dUTP, 2017, Halpin, Klimas, Fletcher, Ariza et al

Dr. Komaroff (in 2018) briefly discusses the 2017 paper by Halpin P., et al. https://youtu.be/VprqU9knS4Y?t=1533

Article: Myalgic Encephalomyelitis/Chronic Fatigue Syndrome: The Human Herpesviruses Are Back! 2021, Ariza

There was a 2017 paper by Williams, Ariza, et al. that seems to have been a precursor to these findings (Nancy Klimas was also an author on that paper). Myalgic encephalomyelitis/chronic fatigue syndrome and gulf war illness patients exhibit increased humoral responses to the...

Edward Shorter’s view of Chronic Fatigue Syndrome

Why is it that, when I think of Edward Shorter's hypotheses, I'm reminded of this scene from "The Naked Gun"?

    Anyone recommend an ultralightweight hoover?

I'm not sure if it's what you're looking for, but I have found this type of corded "stick" vacuum shown below to be very effective, especially in tight areas where a larger, heavier vacuum is unwieldy, like a staircase. It's the Eureka "Quick-Up" and can be found at WalMart or Amazon for around...

Migraine headaches in Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS): Comparison of two prospective cross-sectional studies, Baraniuk et al, 2011

I got migraines without visual aura in the first year of the illness. Years later, and to this day, I occasionally get visual aura without migraine - although the visual aura is usually followed by an odd sense of being "wiped out" and I usually have to go lie down.

BPS attempts at psychologizing Long Covid

If nothing else, I would suspect that the death rate from covid varies from country to country*. In countries where the death rate is higher, you might see proportionally fewer long-covid cases simply because some people who might have gone on to develop long-covid did not survive. Conversely...

Neurological syndromes driven by postinfectious processes or unrecognized persistent infections, Avindra Nath et al, 2018

I think a big part of the problem is that (so far as I know) ME/CFS is not reportable (at least not in the US). Another factor is that, technically, according to the definition, you can't be diagnosed for six months. Even if it were reportable, I wonder how many doctors would remember to report...

Neurological syndromes driven by postinfectious processes or unrecognized persistent infections, Avindra Nath et al, 2018

I ran across this 2018 article by Drs. Nath and Johnson while googling "postinfectious process," because that's the term that I was diagnosed with back in the 1980's. [I was just curious if the term was still used.] It's behind a wall, but there's an abstract here: Neurological syndromes...

Reality of ME. How would you get this across (briefly) using words or graphics?

I'm not sure that this is a great visual metaphor, but it is an example of a "trap" in which the more you struggle to get out, the the tighter the "trap's" hold on you gets.

Paul Garner on Long Covid and ME/CFS - BMJ articles and other media.

On the flip side, sickle cell anemia has some protective advantage against malaria (mainly in very young children), which is why SCA is more prevalent in areas where malaria is endemic. It's an example of natural selection. https://www.cdc.gov/malaria/about/biology/index.html#tabs-1-3

Paul Garner on Long Covid and ME/CFS - BMJ articles and other media.

Wasn't it Nietzsche who said, "When you look down the barrel of the ME/CFS gun and disarm it, the trite metaphor also looks into and disarms you"? Probably not. "I took just enough philosophy in college to screw me up for the rest of my life." - Steve Martin

Paul Garner on Long Covid and ME/CFS - BMJ articles and other media.

It would be a pity if Paul Garner's physicians did not collect and store samples of his blood, spinal fluid, microbiome, etc. during the phase of his illness where he met the CCC (though there's little reason to think they would have). It might have been interesting to see how they compared to...

Alteration of Postural Balance in Patients with Fibromyalgia Syndrome-A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis, Nunez-Fuentes at al, 2021

Apparently, "somatosensory dependence" is a term for a shift away from primarily using visual information to maintain balance and towards using bodily positional information instead. It sounds like it might occur in vestibular dysfunction, because the eye muscles depend heavily on info from the...

News about Long Covid including its relationship to ME/CFS 2020 to 2021

True - the notion of "severity" is no doubt relative. I'd certainly guess that the vast majority of the people who develop post-infectious ME are never actually hospitalized for their initial infection. On the other hand, I don't know if the "mild" Covid cases mentioned in the article are...

News about Long Covid including its relationship to ME/CFS 2020 to 2021

These two observations mentioned in the NYT article seem like a bit of a conundrum: [my bolding] Perhaps the severity of initial acute symptoms is only weakly associated with the onset of ME/CFS following infection, or perhaps long Covid and ME/CFS are similar but not identical, or maybe there...

    Fingernail defects?

Lunulas on all of my fingers... but only on the large toes. Lunulas are absent on any of the 8 smaller toes. Maybe this is typical. I don't know. Also, only developed vertical ridges on my fingernails after getting ME in my early 20's, so, in my case, it doesn't seem related to more advanced age.

    Dr Byron Hyde - Canada

Dr. Hyde from the interview: He says that, as opposed to polio, which injures the nerve endings of the anterior part of the spinal cord, the injury is to the small blood vessels going to that area. I found this interesting for a couple of reasons. First, it sounds very much like Dr...
