Livestream Alan Light, PhD today at 6pm MST "New findings suggest that multiple mitochondrial mutations create susceptibility for ME/CFS"

I got "page not found" at the above link for the live stream, but this worked: https://www.facebook.com/batemanhornecenter/videos/331133540814821/UzpfSTY3NDU0ODk5MjY0OTg1MjoxODMyNzczNzIzNDk0MDM0/

Erythrocyte Deformability As a Potential Biomarker for Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, Davis et al (2018)

Interesting computer simulation of RBCs moving through a retina capillary. Gives a sense of the deformation that goes on. I suspect that this is slowed down compared to real time. You can set it to go 1.5x faster by clicking on the gearwheel next to "YouTube."

Erythrocyte Deformability As a Potential Biomarker for Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, Davis et al (2018)

FWIW, it seems that one way RBCs can become more rigid is when small molecules (ligands) bind to a protein in the cell membrane called glycophorin A (GPA), which, in turn, interacts with other proteins in the cell membrane, reducing deformability. When tracer antibodies to human glycophorin A...

Erythrocyte Deformability As a Potential Biomarker for Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, Davis et al (2018)

About eight months after onset, I underwent a battery of tests at a "famous" otologic institute to try to figure out the cause of my continuous "dizziness." They seemed stumped, but a senior doctor there said that they sometimes saw this kind of dizziness with "vascular insufficiency" to the...

Stanford Community Symposium 2018: Phair, Metabolic traps, Tryptophan trap

I stumbled upon this May 2018 article concerning Tryptophan, the Kynurenine Pathway and IBD (Inflammatory Bowel Disease). Tryptophan Metabolism through the Kynurenine Pathway is Associated with Endoscopic Inflammation in Ulcerative Colitis...

News from the Institute of Neuroimmune Medicine (INIM), NOVA, Nancy Klimas

Hopefully, this grant reflects on some success they've seen in their recent GWI trial. They're looking to do something similar in relation to ME, but are having trouble finding funding. In a video posted on this thread, Dr. Klimas said that a Parkinson's group had agreed fund a small ME/CFS...

frontiers in Neurology: Neuroinflammation and cytokines in ME/CFS: A critical review of research methods - Michael VanElzakker et al - 2018

I think this (the Columbia study in the video above) was more about showing a trend in a large group of patients (~300) vs controls, rather than producing "a consistent and replicable diagnostic cytokine profile" for individual patients.

    Golden hour (/month)

I've never personally noticed a seasonal change, but I wonder if the explanation for feeling better could be as simple as improved sleep. I definitely sleep better when it is cold. Perhaps somewhat better sleep can tip the balance for some, but then the additional activity eventually catches up...

    OMF in Fire Zone...

According to its website, the Open Medicine Foundation is located in Agoura Hills, CA. Currently, that area and many surrounding communities have been besieged by a wind-driven wildfire known as the "Woolsey Fire." The fire began on November 8th, and currently covers 90,000 acres across Ventura...

Who said: don't bother testing patients?

A 1991 editorial by SW contains the following: As seems par for the course, his 2½ page editorial contains 51 references. I found this among a compendium of similar SW quotes gathered by @Valentijn at PR. https://forums.phoenixrising.me/index.php?threads/simon-wessely-quotes.21025/

The Guardian's Science Weekly podcast - 2 November 2018 - What role should the public play in science?

Clearly, he doesn't understand that Work = Power * time. That is, even with low available power, much can sometimes be achieved if the work can be carried out in small increments and/or over much more than the usual amount of time. It's the sort of thing that would be obvious to a physicist.

The Guardian's Science Weekly podcast - 2 November 2018 - What role should the public play in science?

The supposed link between CFS and depression goes back to this July 1990 paper: Chronic Fatigue: A Prospective Clinical and Virologic Study ..in which only six of the 26 patients met the Holmes criteria. This was the famous study in JAMA (Journal of the American Medical Association) which...

Your OMF gift tripled this week!

Well, I just appreciate that whoever made that donation chose to do so. I guess I was trying to convey my opinion that, in addition to being generous, it was smart.

Your OMF gift tripled this week!

If you live in California, and have an adjusted gross income of over $500,000, you can easily find yourself in the 50% tax bracket (Federal & State combined). You can wind up paying half of any additional income in taxes. However, if you donate that money to a qualified charity, it is not...

Your OMF gift tripled this week!

As of a couple of days ago (10/30), they had raised $370,000, which means about $123,333 in donations has been tripled by the addition of $246,666 in matching funds. It also means they need about $51,666 in additional donations (to be matched with $103,333) to meet their $525,000 goal.

Your OMF gift tripled this week!

I found out why the goal is $525,000 by watching the video in the first post of this thread. Someone has pledged up to $350,000 to triple the donations made during this period (10/23-11/27). The "matching" donor adds double to whatever your donation is, so, if you donate $100, they add $200 to...
